I recently bought a 5 man High Gear done tent and we put it up in the garden yesterday. Do the poles break regularly on these kind of tents? Seen some posts about this and am concerned!
I've never ever had a pole break on me in 20 years of camping with my own tents. Perhaps Ive just been lucky though. There does seem to be a bit of a upsurge in broken poles this summer though. I cant be sure if its incorrectly erected tents or just less quality control on these tents flooding the market just to meet demands.
I'm tempted to give the same answer as the Captain's reply to the question "Do these ships sink very often?" from a nervous passenger i.e. "Just the once, usually." Sorry! Somewhere on this site there is an excellent item by Valk-scot on Broken Poles.
I think it is just a case of different qualities from different manufacturers. Hi Gear is a "Budget" range so i would imagine the diameter of the poles will be about 9-11mm wheras say an Outwell equivalent would be 13-15mm and also Durawrapped which is like a form of tape wrapped round the outside of the poles for extra strength - it also means if the pole does crack it holds its shape til you can replace it.
I think that the Hi-Gear tent in question is a rebadged Gelert Tornado 5 , and I have recently replaced two sections of poles for a friend on this tent. The quality of pole appears to result in a clean even break horizontally .It probably is hit and miss , but for the cost of these tents , this is built to a price point . You could replace all the poles, but you might as well have then invested in a more expensive tent . On a personal note in nearly 25 years camping , I have had many misfortunes, but never a broken pole . I think as regards the OP , it could potentially happen to any tent , but providing you have the tools and ability to repair a pole or jury rig it , then that is as much as can be expected .
when a pole breaks is it possible to replacethe one section with a better quality pole or would it have to be the full pole as id like to replace mine but dont want the expense all at once and seems silly to replace things that aren't broken. i know i cant mix and match widths.
It is possible to replace one section with a better one , but that is more likely the thicker the pole . Two options are to buy a kit between £5 ad £10 which has shock cord , needle and about 4m of pole sections , or to try somewhere like your local camp shop who will be willing to repair the pole.Yeoman's are best bet for this as in my experience , you pay or the pole only .The green top is to scout campsite bins for broken tents etc and salvage poles, guys, runners , pegs etc .

never had a broken pole yet and had some very rough conditions.
Still I am sure it will come at some point and thats why i got rid of an old tent and kept the poles - better to be prepared just in case!
I've had...err, four? Since my first fibreglass poled tent, shortly after they first started to become common about 14 years (?) ago. Three single sections in different tents and one major incident when a freak gust hit the side of my Oregon and nearly flattened it. I had to repair two poles in situ, use all of my four spare pole sections for that tent and a full roll of duct tape. However it was clear that the weakened poles were transferring a lot of stress onto the good ones so we went home a day early before it collapsed on us. I replaced the entire pole set for that tent, actually. I didn't trust the survivors to be undamaged.
I've got a goodly supply of spare sections though. I'm always amused at how people will ditch a perfectly good complete pole or even tent because of one broken pole section...so watch your campsite dustbins!
Stayed at Gallowhill site nr Kinross this weekend and saturday was windy errr very windy. Bizzarly I was pitched at top of site sheltered by a 8 feet bank of earth. At my tent I was totally out of the wind and was stood outside cooking. Less that 20 meters away tents were getting a thrashing and at least 2 many be 3 went down in the wind with broken poles. One tent had what appeared to be four poles and two of them were smashed to bits. Sad sight to see the owners come back to find the mess at 5/6 pm then have to pack it all away and pressumably go home.
