Valuable like handbag, camera, phone I always have with me anyway, the DVD player stays locked in the car, I leave everything else, my cooker, gas bottle and cooking stuff stay outside my tent, behind my windbreak, and not had anything go missing yet touch wood.

i think your all being over cautious.  I have heard the saying better safe than sorry, but how many have actually had someone invade there space?  I have had nothing taken and while i don't confess to being an old hand, I think on proper campsites its just a no no and isn't done.  Not saying that is the same at some of the chavier sites, but its still far from the norm.

John, Good advice and maybe we are being cautious, but my OH works in the awning business and they are always having them sent in from customers to repair them where thieves have slashed through just to grab at whatever they can inside. This is especially true for people who have camped abroad. I asked OH what they take (can't be easy walking around with a gas cylinder and cooker and remaining unsuspicious). They tend to go for anything they feel they can get away with, especially bikes - just ride off with them. So perhaps we should all just in the back of our minds, just be a little cautious.

I'm ok with caution but not to the point of obsession.  If you have something with you that you are really concerned about losing then perhaps it shouldn't be with you.  Most of us take cameras/camcorders etc around with us anyway so they don't attract attention being carted to and from the car.

I personally have never had anything taken while camping, but last weekend was away with friends, we spent the day doing a dog training course, when we returned to the campsite (lovely country location, not a huge all-singing-all-dancing site with loads of people) there were 3 tents in the group which had been broken into.

Items stolen were gas bottles, stoves, EHU kits, cool boxes etc.

It was devastating for the victims. Especially as one of the victims is deaf, she then felt unsafe (as she'd never hear someone getting into her tent at night) and immediately packed up and went home.

I would have NEVER expected crime on that site (there were only 20 tents there in total), and it's made me a LOT more wary :(

Edit to add: it was a local trip, and is not one of the locations in my signature

2011 plans:
April - Exmoor 11 nights
May - Brynawelon, Wales 3 nights
July - Rendlesham Forest 4 nights
Then I am off back home to Australia, where the weather is always perfect for camping :)
