Must be this time of year but we seemed to collect a small colony of flying insects in the ceiling of our tent while away last week.

Anyone got any method of keeping them out (short of keeping the tent sealed)?

I've seen some people with large, scented candles of some sort - not sure if they work or were just decorative?

I just always keep my mesh door screen zipped up  ( this is also pet hate of mine as I hate bugs in my stuff 17! ..but , as this is sometimes a pain to have to keep unzipping when you want to get back in the tent and the kids never remember to zip back up..

I have been looking at some curtain type fly screens from Bettaware that are really meant for windows and doors  - think you get 2 in a pack and from the picture, it looks like you  just 'part' them and walk through without having to zip open.. i was thinking I could velco them onto the inside of the door way...but very interested to hear how other manage this problem17

I had the same problem a couple of weeks ago, I bought some ant and fly killer spray. One spray in the main living area (food all stowed in spare sleeping area) before I went out for the day, came back in the evening to find no more flying things.

we take a dustbuster with us - it sucks the suckers up nicely!  that is when inside the tent or when taking the tent down...

if inbetween fly and mesh its a harder issue, but fly and insect spray works fine, just stay a decent distance away to stop the spray condensing on the flysheet.

With my OH suffering with asthma, fly spray is not an option. We have the tent open during the day (except the bedroom areas) and use one of those electric tennis racket looking thingys to get rid of the flying bugs. It is very effective and we generally get the tent cleared of them in around five minutes. We bought ours from Poundland or Wilkinsons (can't remember) for a couple of quid though some garden centres sell them for around £8-£10.

The scented candles do work but we got ours from a camping shop and don't know what the scent is.

The candles are citronella, they do work as do the coils, like incense sticks that are citronella.

They kept us going in Scotland in July when we camped next to a river - midge central.

Wenpip, the ribbon curtains I think you mean are good for straight doorways, they form a barrier that the flys cant get through and you just part them to enter.  I forsee a problem in a tent though as in my tent the doors slope and this would let the little blighters in, also a gust of wind parts the ribbons and in they fly.

I use one of those 'sticky garment cleaners'. Can't think what they're actually called for the life of me! Just wipe it across the tent and they're history.
