Hi,We are new to camping, got tent but not been anywhere yet.  Won't be able to go this year as OH has an operation on his back next week.  Would like any hints or tips on camping and places to stay in Derbyshire.  Cheers!

Hi and welcome!

My main tip would be to take loads (I mean loads) of fleece blankets to insualte below and above your (air) bed. Insulaton is the key to warmth and comfort!

Get fleece blankets for around £2 from Primark.

I hope your OH op and recovery goes well

Use the autumn/winter months to gather your camping equipment together.

Concerntrate on buying the essentials - good quality sleeping bags, something to sleep on, cooking equipment, table and chairs etc.....but don't go mad (very tempting as it is!!)
Depending on how and when you want to camp, things like EHU (electric hook up), cool box, carpet for tents, wardrobes, camp kitchen, utility tent, windbreaks may or may not be classed as essential and are things you can gather together slowly.
Also ask friends and family to buy you camping stuff for Christmas and birthday presents!!

Start to plan some trips away - it really gives you something to look forward to!
Personally I would stay close to home for your first trip away (maybe within an hour's drive) If you leave something essential behind you'll be near enough to pop home and get it!

Popular sites are already taking bookings for 2010 so if there is a site you really want to visit (especially if its during the school holidays or Bank Holiday) it might be worth enquiring now.

If you haven't done so already, consider joining the Camping & Caravanning Club (C&CC) as they have some beautiful sites and being a memeber allows you access to their CS sites.

Use the search facility on this forum to help you find potential sites and read the site reviews (honest comments by campers who have stayed there)

Hope your OH recovers soon and you enjoy your camping.

Hi and welcome.  In the time you have before you start camping spend loads of time on here and read all you can.  You WILL pick up loads and loads of useful tips.  Remember no one can be an expert at the beginning.  Why not try a spot of garden camping if you have the room.  The inside of your tent looks the same wherever it is and it will give you a taste.

One thing I have found is before you buy anything check on here to see what others have thought of your intended purchase as it could save you a fortune in the long term. Before we bought our tent we listened to what everyone had to say and before we took the plunge we thought long and hard and thanks to this site we don't have a white elephant! It applies to everything from tent to sleeping equipment and cooking stuff too. If someone on here has used it you'll be able to judge whether it's for you or not. Like has been said already, plan ahead and use the winter to trawl this site for tips and advice, you certainly won't regret it, I know I haven't. When we're snug and dry and in our tent I ALWAYS point out to my OH how justified I am in spending so much time on this forum lol. BEWARE CAMPING AND THIS FORUM IS ADDICTIVE. OH thinks I'm a saddo case but as I pointed out, he married me. Good luck with the OH's op and before I forget, welcome to this wonderful and informative site, you won't be able to stop now!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have a problem stressing you, sort it. If you can't, there's no point worrying about it coz it won't make a blind bit of difference!!!! Jules

Loads of great places in the peak district, but would recommend golden valley in ripley too. Very friendly people and stuff for the kids to do too!
