I'm planning on getting our dog one of these for our October trip. SHe is very skinny and bony and his look so comfy!:

Comfy coat

I'm think if she had a sleeping bag and moved in the night, she may end up on top of it, therefore getting cold?

Can't a dog just sleep in the outer portion of the tent? We always used to keep our dog outside in a kennel...

Most definitely not. Dogs unlike us cannot add or take off layers to keep cool/warm. Yes if you have a working dog or one that is left out in a kennel all year round, then they do develop a coat thick enough to cope and store the required body fat.

These days most dogs sleep in the house that is centrally heated and they/their coat adjusts to that and to then stick them outside in near freezing conditions is cruel and could well end up with a trip to the vets. Even to just stick them in the outer portion of the tent without something to help keep them warm during the colder nights could cause them to suffer from the cold.

It also depends partially on the dog and breed as well. We have two dogs, the older one is 15&1/2 and seems to be a Border Collie cross from working stock as she seems immune to the cold, she'll sit out in the rain or lie in the snow and not seem bothered, the other who is also a border collie is very fair weathered.

Dogs have become house animals over the last 50+ years and are no longer hardy enough to the elements.

Sweeping statement! Not as we go into Autumn and then Winter, fine in the Summer, but that's passed now.
