Since the weather is looking pretty nice for the weekend we are thinking of taking off this afternoon for the weekend.
We have not booked anywhere and are thinking of just rolling up - is this daft, i.e. would one expect sites to be full given that we are out of season ?
Yeah you should be fine, I am having the same dilemma as OH won't get home till 6pm, then an hour to pack car, 1 hour or so to get there, will be dark, not picthed tent more t han three times so that is what is putting me off tbh He will be tired after work and tiredness + pitching in dark + being hungry could = Row
We're off in the morning for a couple of nights in Wales, which we've decided to grab at the last minute on the strength of the weather forecast. When I rang the site to ask if we should book, they told me they had plenty of space for this weekend.
Hopefully you'll be able to contact your chosen site before you set off, but if you have a couple of alternatives lined up you should be okay. There won't be masses of folks camping this weekend, as the schools have just started back and only the camping nuts (who can't ignore a good weather forecast to save their lives!) will be out there at this time of year, I reckon.
Hope you get to book in advance, for peace of mind, but I'm sure you'll find a good place. Have a great time!

yes - saw your other post on pitching after dark. Thinking about it if we dont get our skates on then we'll be doing the same tonight :-)
Go for it, you have a few hours ahead of us, so you should be up and ready before dusk, to enjoy the evening
I've just rang a site 20 minutes away from us to check they had pitches for tonight, i like to know when i get there we won't be turned away, site owner said they had plenty of tent pitches available.
Can't wait now, kids brought their jammies & change of clothes down this morning (just me & the girls going), i need to grab tent & gear, then after school its off to my Mums for tea then on to the site, hopefully by 6pm we'll be sat outside chilling with our books in the sunshine....bliss!

Have fun!
crack a beer open for him the moment you arrive, smiles all round.
Hope everyone has a good time and the weather stays nice! We had just made the decision to go yesterday when when my neighbour phoned and asked me to look after her cat whilst she goes to spain! I couldn't say no so im gutted! It will be next year for us now.
thanks all - we had a FANTASTIC weekend in Croyde. Weather was perfect, the campsite was very quiet when we arrive Friday evening but was a lot busier by Saturday with people staying just one night.
and yes... we ended up pitching the tent in the dark (due to bad traffic on M5) which was great fun and we didn't stress too much.
We're heading off this weekend to Norfolk again - both got a half day from work on Friday so we can head straight up and hopefully get pitched up before the majority of weekenders turn up. I'm really looking forward to it now!
