I'm pretty sure I could buy the bits and make one myself anyway. I'll have to price it up and see if I can do it cheaper than a shop bought one
When I bought our EHU cable at the start of the season last year, I thought the same (As a qualified spark, it seemed to make sense)
But by the time you budget for a decent damp resistant enclosure, an RCD, and MCB, socket outlets, 20m or so of quality cable (which is more expensive than you'd think!) etc etc etc, then the £50 mark is not so outrageous after all.
From memory, I paid £45 for mine from Towsure, it has 25m of orange cable, and three socket outlets.
Worth every penny
I couldn't find the bits online so bought one for £46. 3 sockets, 16amp, usual RCD and trip at the top with 20 metres of orange cable. Oddly, the instructions say not to be used in damp or wet conditions which rather defeats the object really. I sincerely hope it just means that the socket end shouldn't be left outside.
I sort of wonder about the heater as well. We get all this safety advice about buying the correct cables with RCD and anything but the correctly manufactured cable just isn't worth the risk etc; and then we all seem to go out and buy electric heaters which have no protection against the damp whatsoever.
