Having just managed to get myself into Glasto 2010 as a helper I am now starting to plan things!!
We're a family of 6, but am not sure what would be most sensible a tent to take for us to sleep in.
I would not take my new outwell utah as apart from anything we don't need the living space. However I'm not sure whether to take my 6 man vango which is a fab tent, but might be a bit big, or whether actually to just take two small 3 man tents (I know we've got at least one if not two in our loft).
I know from experience that space is a premium in the crew's camping area so am not sure what to go for, esp in terms of potential for damage to tents or even the whole tent getting knicked.
Anyone any experience?

buy something on eBay that won't cost a fortune and that you don't mind not needing again.

mmmm Go to a 'civilized' 'family' festival? There are family/quiet fields available for those not wanting their property damaged.

I was going to say the same as grapefruitmoon then read your post again and see you are a Glasto helper. I agree with the others, take whatever you wouldn't be sad to have to leave behind.

It's not that bad in the helper's fields, they are well locked away from the normal punters!! But hmmm that is a point. Maybe two little tents might be a better idea. As long as they're waterproof!!

i know someone that goes to glasto as a radiographer. She does one day of work and gets ratarsed for the rest. I bet most are the same and i doubt they are much different to the rest of the punters to be honest. the odd puke splash or yellow waterfall is to be expected, and if it don't happen great, but at least if you prepare for it its less of a hassle if youhaven't taken your prized possession and instead lose a 40 quid ebay special!

errm, or take a really good tent!
we (from our workplace) had permission and went round after the bestival collecting up all the abandoned tents/leftovers.
these (and those after the iow festival) are given to the scouts, and watever they cant use are given to charities.
i know that they have sent a huge consignment of tents out to africa and auctioned other stuff off for various needy charities.
so, dont think that your tent will automatically end up on ebay if you leave it, most of them actually go to a good cause.

Hmmm maybe the vango so we're all in one tent but I'll put the windbreaks round it, to protect from people weeing on it. It does depend where you camp and how close to the pathways/gates, I don't mind moving a bit further back as last time the noise was quite troublesome!! I didn't need to leave the tent to hear REM :) (this was 2003)

I'm really relieved about this. A while ago someone posted a link to the youtube vid. of the camping field at Glastonbury after the festival was over, and it was distressing to see so many fine tents abandoned.
It's great to know that someone could be bothered dismantling them and packing them away and that they went to good causes. Thanks for posting, tinallkn!

Sadly, some of the 'yoof' these days seem to think the done thing is to burn everything when done, so even the charities don't get anything. Then again, that was at Leeds, which seems to attract more than its fair share of braindeads intent on nothing but destruction.

i think that the main prob is that a lot of festival goers dont want to take their tents, but also dont want othere to take it and sell it on said auction site!
the scouts themselves (apart from adult leaders) are not allowed to clear the sites, and we have strict instructions on how to approach them (we have to 'smell' tents before entering them, then we have to visually make sure there are no 'nasties' , we have to wear industrial gloves, boots and hi vis jackets) it is not a job for the faint hearted i can tell you!! and what people do in tents!!! ewwww!!
so , please dont blame the youth, in a way you can understand , and you ought to see the amount of middle aged people that attend these festivals!!
