It would be good if tent manufacturers provided extra guying points all round a tent...could save lots of broken poles.

You need clingons to created additional guying points.

Thank you. I had heard of them but didn't know what they were. Now looked them up. They seem great for clipping onto material such as tarps and existing broken guy anchor points but I don't think there is anything on the outside of my tent to clip them onto.

I really needed to put extra guys on the poles or very close to the poles to stop them being blown inwards but the main poles are inside the flysheet. The porch pole is inside a long sleeve so no anchor points there except the front door toggle, which wasn't ideal but it helped, at risk of ripping the toggle off of course.

Thank to all for the condolences

Yes I could have paid more attention to the weather forecast but when we put the tent up it wasn't blowing at all (it would be almost impossible to get the tent up in the wind) I was more worried about rain as our tent is inner first. I wasnt expecting a sunny summrish weekend but as someone said above you pays your money and you take your chance (how many times has fair weather been predicted and it turns out shirtty)

I believe that if the main pole hadn't broken the way it did (and it was a clean break where the sections join near the top of the arch, no bending) The tent would have come through with flying colours. There were a couple of hours while we were trying to figure out what had happened (and possibly a few more before we realised what had happened) that the tent held up even with the broken main pole

At dawn the wind started to pick up and we had nearly emptied the tent when it really gusted causing the other main pole to give up which then lead to the rest of the damage.

I still have faith in the tent design and if we are not able to repair the damage then we will replace with the same design (does anyone else get emotional about their tent??) but you can be assured I will be a little more wind shy.

We camped at the start of the Landie London to Brighton run on Saturday night, we were pitched bum to wind, but the back of the pop-up was blown almost flat a few times - deltas and tensioned guy ropes seemed to hold it though, even though the turf is apparently only a few inches deep, and with the new army arctic sleeping bags and self-inflating mats, we were warm and toasty all night.

Yes, we knew the weather was going to be blustery, but there was an annual event we wanted to attend, so we took a small tent and made the most of it.

Oh yes!  I think you can guarantee the vast majority of folks here are very bonded with their chosen canvas!  17

Filey for us at the weekend and glad we went despite the weather forecast. The Gaudeloupe shuddered and flapped a bit but remained rock solid. Plenty of sun on Saturday afternoon and Sunday too which we would have missed if stuck at home. Only one other camper on site so no queue for the showers either. We have decided for that to be our last trip of the season though, as our next free weekend is in November and that would be pushing things _too_ far!

We camped at Silverstone race track this weekend which is rather exposed at the best of times and on Saturday it got a little bit wild! Many tents didn't survive, though I did try to save a few fellow campers tents. I have to say most of the dead tents were that way because they were poorly pitched and used cheapo pegs that had just pulled out of the ground, but one or two were just unlucky due to where they were. I'm pleased to say our Wynnster Curlew was fantastic, hardly budged and we managed to sleep just fine. We did discover two cracked pole sections this morning when we took it down, but they were held so well by the pole sleeves we didn't even notice when it was up.

Same here. Friday was actually a glorious sunny and calm day and the wind didn't start until Friday night. My tent is inner first as well and rain was my main concern. Forecasts got that wrong because the wind (and rain) wasn't due until later on Saturday)

I still have faith in the tent design and if we are not able to repair the damage then we will replace with the same design (does anyone else get emotional about their tent??) but you can be assured I will be a little more wind shy.

I must admit quietly thanking the tent for not letting me down. It has weathered some wind before but not quite as bad as that and previously I was able to pitch rear to wind which is much better. This time the tent took the full force from side on...not good but survived. I will still be looking for a more sturdy tent though...I'm not that emotional. Lying inside a tent at night watching the poles twisting and bending above you does not adhere you to a tent. I thought 'Oh sh*****t!' a few times though.

We were going to Scarborough Saturday for a long weekend but after seeing the forecast we changed our minds. We were really dissapointed because we were looking foreward to 3 days break from work. I doubt we will get another chance this year. Reading your post voffer I'm pleased we did change our minds. Sorry you lost your tent, we would have have been gutted if we had lost our tent.

Three times we have had this happen now.First time we watched the birds circling, (should pay attention to nature)12.30am and i was up dropping canvas tent on its knees lying everything flat on floor,We slept in van.£75 to replace pole legs.Mate was with us in my other tent which went straight to tent heaven!!
The Rain ,lots of rain took out my large Royal Andorra, tent survived but that episode put me off that tent.
Whitsun 2007 blowing up a hooley but no weather warnings anywhere not in reception, on weather sites ect.Shell island lost a lot cos it came in so quick.
I had a 3 inch gash in my Nebraska.
A friend of mine was going to Shell last weekend and changed her mind cos of the weather.I could not find that report, that weather is here now.Weather cannot be predicted for more than 3 days in advance.
If we waited for the wind to die down we would never go.
