Nowt different mark - roof tents have been around for donkeys years. But finally they're now available at a decent price instead of the thousands of pounds they used to cost!

As they say... "What's the point 'o' that, then?"

I can see the need to be safe from the wildlife if you're in Africa, but the tents are tiny!  Why not just put the seats flat and stretch out in the rangey?  And it's not very practical when you want to ask the neighbours round for drinks in the pouring rain! 17

Naw... I like a tent you can hold a tea-dance in! 17

Theres loads of different roof tents about, the price reflects quailty & content. Theres far better ones about than those in the link. The best type have a rigid shell & look like a large flat roof box. They have always been more popular on the continent than here.

You tried sleeping in a vehicle full of gear? I have, several times, when I've been camping while competing in Dawn to Dusk motorcycle enduro, and with a vehicle full of bike gear there was barely enough room to put the seats back. Fold up tent on the roof would have been ideal!

But the rigid shell ones are well tight on space. A mate has got one of the expedition ones on his landy, and with it folded out there is a fair decent bit of room.

Fair point, but I'd still prefer a nice, all-weather, one-man ground tent for a fraction of the price.

Your post made me wistful... Wish I still had my motorcycle... sigh... 17

FoO....what bike did you have? I had a KTM620 EXC up until a few years ago, but found it too heavy for tight sections on enduro courses (I wasn't very fit at the time). Since changed for a KTM200EXC that I'm about to MOT and tax again - love winter riding to work!

Mmmm... wish mine had been a 620! 17

Mine was very 'umble by comparison!  Just a little Honda 90 17  17  I would have loved a bigger bike, but got married and had kids and we pooled our resources and got a car instead.17

It was a heavy bike for the power, and not stylish by any standards, but it was my 'Easy Rider' machine - my stake on the open road - and I had a lot of fun with it.

Not quite so keen as you on winter riding, after I overturned on a patch of black ice on the factory car-park, and all the lads were lined up at the window, laughing at me!  Considering I couldn't get up, and had a heavy bike on its side, with the wheels still spinning and petrol possibly leaking out, I thought they were no gentlemen! 17

I had some pride in it, though, and didn't appreciate my MIL calling it "your little put-put!"17

Hey I see the roof-tents can be much bigger than the Ebay one looked.  That one in your photo looks pretty cool, Val! 17

Nice pic Val - that looks llike a Howling Moon tent on a Defender 110 station wagon

Those tents sell for over £1000!!!

Never used one but would like to try ( certainly at that price you wouldn't want ot be making a mistake)

I saw one of these on the C&CC site at Oban.

The chap along the road from me has one mounted on a trailer (old landrover back end) and he tows the trailer with his landrover. He does these cross country trials and sleeps over in the trailer/tent.

There were some of these in the same field as us at Church Farm (Dorset) for one night. Large 4x4 meet.
