Hi I have problems with sciatica but it has not been severe enough to require surgery - I have a good GP who referred me for physio and I find that if I stick to the exercises at least 3 times a week my back maintains its resilience.
In terms of camping, I have an Aerobed now which is adjustable in firmness (too hard can be just as damaging to the back as too soft). Any airbed can feel cold but this is solved by having a fleecy underblanket under us.
The other thing that has helped is that I went and tried many camping chairs until I found one that curves properly into my lumbar area so that it is supported. Before this I used to move the "Back friend" support seat I have in the car into my camping chair.
I hope you make a good recovery and that your camping days continue!
