We have both but we don't use both together.

We had the roofbox originally and have kept it (well the replacement model) as sometimes we want extra space but without towing.

If your trailer isn't big enough I'd upgrade to a bigger trailer and/or mount your roofbox on the trailer.

Unless of course if you were away you used a roofbox on your trailer on a day to day basis - ie kids on the backseat, dog in the boot - no room for beach stuff or whatever

I don't know about your cars but bear in mind that if you haven't got a towbar already fitted its quite an expensive job. We looked into it last year as we had the offer to borrow a trailer but it was quite dear.

I've just had a quick look at prices for comparison. A set of Thule roofbars will probably cost somewhere in the region of £170-£200 for a medium sized hatchback. Add to that a roofbox with around 440L capacity at £300-£350 and you have a total price of £470-£550. You will probably pay around £250-£300 for a towbar to be fitted. A trailer that will carry the kind of items described will cost around £250-£300, giving a total of £500-£600.

  • Roof bars + box = c.£470-£550.
  • Towbar + trailer = c.£500-£600.

Therefore the difference in complete price is not that significant. Trailers result in less drag and offer better fuel consumption. THe additional added benefit is that once the towbar is fitted you always have the option at a later date to pull a trailer tent/folding camper/caravan if you choose to.

However, go with whichever you feel like.

We've been after something to free up a little boot space as its always totally crammed, but didnt have the money to splash out on roof boxes / bars or trailers / tow bars, nor did we have the space to store any of the above, so we've bought an XRack soft roof rack and a cargo bag to go with it which will all store away nice and small, with the intention of putting the bulky but not too heavy stuff up there.

The kids, perhaps........

So how many of you have a trailer and a roof box?  I have a trailer but now thinking I need a roof box too!

Yep!!

I have an estate car with a 470 litre roof box plus an Erde trailer with the high top cover. For those concerned about fuel consumption, I went to Dorset last year and averaged 52mpg fully laden .... and keeping to 60mph!
