Hello again, have just been fortunate enough to buy a bear lake 4 and am extremely happy with it and all of my other kit apart from one thing- tent lighting,,,,

For years we have been using a 12v strip light plugged into the car battery and this worked brilliantly until the inevitable happens and you either cant get the car started in the morning, or you drive off shortly after sunrise dragging parts of the tent and  a flickering lamp behind the car much to the amusement of onlookers

This made me look towards ufo type LED lights which are brilliant and pour down light like there's no tommorrow, the only thing is its a very cold blueish light and it destroys any the snug feeling of being wrapped up in a tent, also makes the recent cold weather camping feel like a polar expedition

What i'm looking for is a safe (not gas) light source or any ideas or solutions that you may be using out there!!,

We are trying to steer clear of EHU to keep the flexibility of being able to pitch anywhere we want and not have to prebook sites and pitches with a hookup, so mains based lighting is off the menu

Cheers, Jack

If you don't want to use gas or mains electric you are pretty limited to battery powered lights (which can work out expensive) or paraffin/oil lamps.
We have 2 oil lanterns from Towsure which give off a beautiful light which is adjustable.

Or why don't you go to an Arts & Crafts shop and buy some sort of coloured plastic sheet and make a "filter" to put over you UFO light to give it a warmer glow !!

I use a coleman gas lamp, not sure what they are called, but it has the white net filament. It gives off a beautiful warm yellow light and also lots of heat. Never had any worries about gas.

Keep the light you enjoy using and power it off a jump pack. That way it will not kill the car, and you cant drive off towing the tent and no trailing wire to trip over. When you go out on a trip pop it in the car plug in the cig lighter socket and recharge.

I do like the idea of oil lanterns, - are they economical to run? i used to use a camping gaz lantern but i was forever changing mantles and cartridges, also still have shiny patches on my fingers from touching the wrong bit when it was hot!

I'd go with an orange cellophane option :)

gas is the brightest and ehu lighting is the cheapest.  IMHO anything else isn't worthwhile.  We take a battery lantern in case the gas lamps need changing... other than that its gas or electric only for us.

You'd think with the amount of times that this gets asked/suggested some equipment manufacturers would design lamps with them already 'filtered' like this. I wish they would as I like a nice light but don't really want to have to muck about sticking stuff onto lights I've just bought.

We're using a Coleman F1 Lantern in the tent and a Stellia CV outside. Great light off them but doesn't really fulfil your 'no gas' requirement.
