Hi everyone, soooo glad the camping season is almost upon us. Currently upgrading my camping equipment and can't decide on a Grilletto "Son of Hibachi" BBQ or Cobb. If anybody owns either or both then your views would be welcome.
It all depends on what you're hoping to cook... If it's just ordinary BBQ fare, the Grilletto makes more sense. It's quick and easy, and can be packed up hot with the snuff out pouch compared to a normal charcoal job. If you want a bit more scope for meals, the Cobb will smoke, roast and steam as well.
II like to be flexible and take what I need for the particular trip, so I've got both, I'm just awkward like that
Main deciders will be budget and what you'll be using it for, as is usually the case with camp kit.
I think they are very different and as much as I admire the Cobb I think that you would probably make more use of the Grilletto.
We love our Son of Hibachi, heats up ready to cook very quickly, only uses a very small amount of charcoal after cooking you just close it up & it cleans itself. Once cooled for a short while you can put it in the snuff bag and away. Its obviously very transportable. Even if you were to buy a Cobb later on you would still find plenty of uses for the S O H.
The Cobb's not a barbecue, it's a coal-fired oven/smoker. It's great at what it does, but it won't grill over an open flame, which is what I call barbecuing.
I like the look of the Grilletto, and the way it works is very clever, but you do pay a lot extra for that party trick over other portable BBQs.
As ever, assess what you're likely to cook, where and when, and buy appropriately. Other alternatives are available. This looks interesting, and so does this.

------------- * You never know where you're going 'til you get there...
We have the SOH and it truly is a wonderful bbq. However, we bought the cadac last year for our visit to France as a lot of places in the south don't permit barbeques and have used it consistently ever since - i am happy to have both. Sorry can't speak for the cobb as don't have one but am assured that they are also wonderful. If I were you I would go for the one that you would definately use more so it is just a case of being sure what kind of cooking you would do most often! eventually, you could have SOH and a Cobb!!!
We have a SoH for BBQing (excellent) and a Cadac Safari Chef for grilling and general cooking - you can take all the bits off and just use the gas ring. Very useful for overnighting, and non-BBQ camp sites.
Although I am a Biker, Hairy and overweight ........ I don't have a Cobb.
