I don't see how you could appeal to both the "want peace and quiet, get away from it all, bed at 1030" group AND the "make as much noise as we like, all night" group all at the same time and in the same location........?

From my own perspective the idea of "no rules, make as much noise as you like" would kill any inkling of interest I might have had, stone dead!

Just to clarify ... the two groups never meet - each booking gets a private field to themselves. If they want late night music I find them a suitably remote location.
If they want peaceful quiet get-away-from-it-all experience - that's what I'll find for them.

The thing is though Dawn200 you don't have those two groups of people at the same time or at the same place -you only have your party -  that's the beauty of this idea and I wish tobylerone every success.

We go camping with at least two other families - there were 28 of us at Shell Island last time we went  - we are not loud music and party into the early hours types but we do like to have a laugh and a drink around the fire in the evening (even after 11pm!!).

My wish is for another place like Shell Island where the kids can disappear into the woods for hours and make dens or play in streams- I know there's no beaches where the OP is targeting so OH's sea fishing would be out of the window but I will certainly be having a look at the website.

Finally and it's a but,  it costs less than £400 for 28 of us to go to Shell Island for 2 nights and if you can get a quiet spot there then it's pretty much close to wild camping so I don't know if a weekend would be within our budget - a week at £750 might be, because we'll be spending over £35 a night for 5 of us to go to Cornwall next year.

I think it's a good idea but problematic in terms of 'facilities'.  Judging by many of the posts here, you may get into trouble for not supplying EHU for those who are unable to camp without TVs, DSs, hair straighteners, ipods etc etc.

I have camped in farmers fields which is great except where sourcing drinking water.  Under current Legionella regs, taking a tank of water may not be compliant (unless you have some impressive temperature control system) - how do you intend to supply water?

noise and disturbance is our greatest concern and a great deal of effort goes towards ensuring that this is kept within reasonable levels.

nearby residents are given contact details and are encouraged to contact us immediately should they feel the disturbance is too much.

  • Must be secluded or remote – so that noise levels will not disturb any houses nearby.
  • No noisy neighbours! ... Unless of course you are those noisy neighbours ... in which case there will be no killjoy complaining neighbours!!

I cut and pasted the above from your website.  I think your idea IS a good one and the first page of the website makes it sound very inviting, but scrolling through the pages there is a lot about "noise" and "disturbance" and how you are going to do everything to minimise these.  By mentioning them so often, I feel you are inadvertently giving the impression that you are expecting there to BE a lot of noise and disturbance, which is quite off-putting, I think.  I appreciate that the impression you are probably trying to achieve is one of a free and easy camp with lots of fun and people having a whale of a time, but I think you need to be careful not to give the impression that one of your camps is more like a rave, for example.

In your shoes I would re-write some of the above and try and emphasise the fun aspect rather than the noise aspect.

I think you also need to try and identify your target market -- you say groups of 10-15 people -- to be honest, I cannot think of that many groups of 10-15 people who might routinely get together and go camping.  Families is the obvious one of course, but in any family group you are going to get a mix of fuddy duddies/ravers/kids so you need to be able to appeal to all of them together at the same camp.  Hen parties - umm no, can't see it.....  Corporate - possibly.  Groups of uni students - definitely, but they are generally poor so you'd have to price it low.  Groups of schoolkids - possibly, but the health and safety regs would probably be a nightmare.  Scout and guide groups - I think they would love it but again you'd have to price it low.

To be honest, I am struggling to see who your main market would actually really be.

I am sorry if this is all negative, it is not meant to be!  But you asked for opinions and this is mine

maybe theres something in the wedding market. you know the whole family are invited to a wedding outside the area. We did one recently and it cost me my wife and 2 kids £100 per night in a hotel, and plenty of relatives went aswell. Well if there are loads going £500 for the weekend doesn't seem too bad

    Well done that man

Nice to hear from you and pleased to hear that it's off the ground

    What I would do is

remove the 15 people limit, could give any one with more or less people the wrong impression. Group is a word that works fine

Split the web pages up so that lively  groups  ( takes the noise problem away )

and the peaceful section are in no doubt that they are separate.

Family friendly page,  go forth and google and  match a couple of your locations with local interests,  for family fun  ( keeping the family amused is a must so a couple of trips out is a necessity ).

Weddings etc.  Any of the locations got a suitable church or nearby Hotel with wedding licence.  Offer a hog-roast back at campsite  for the evening  ( no I don't know why weddings and hog-roasts go together, but most of the UKCS weddings have included one    )

Now, normal campers what like we are     umm.......       I would pick one of your locations and invite units for a pre-set price.   Like the rallies that you see on the meets pages.

So for instance spring bank holiday,    X  number of units to private field,  for peace and seclusion.   Uncommercialised location

feel free to ignore  any or all of these musings,  because you have already  got what it takes to make a success of it

A camp for single people might work really well.  There are many single people in this country who would love the opportunity to go camping but don't have anyone to go with.  I think singles weekends would be really popular, and single people will often pay a premium a bit more than a family would.  You could have separate weekends for 'lively' and 'peaceful', and if you could lay on some activities it would help break the ice among the group and bring people together.  You could market it as 'meeting new friends', 'getting away from it all'. 'eco friendly' etc.  You might have to word it carefully to ensure that just because it was for singles it didn't sound like a knocking-shop, though ....

i think it's a great idea - we love quiet family camping, BUT we also love family group camping, we struggle to find campsites to accomodate the growing numbers of our camping friends, we currently have 10-12 families but we can only seem to go in groups of 6 families, so it's a first come first served basis which is ashame, our kids all go to bed by 7:30pm and we like to have adult time after that esp round a campfire (safely) undoubtedly we try to limit noise as we are considerate campers, but it would be so nice to be able to have a sing song round the fire, and relax with friends, also not worry if the kids woke early - as they could just be allowed to go play and be happy rather than being sat on!!

we will only camp for a min of 3 nights and sorry but gotta have my EHU!!

thats my opinion! - best of luck

Hey everyone … big thanks for all the advice so far

Thought I’d try and respond to a few questions and comments:

Bob61 – “get prices down” … totally understand that there are cheaper options and would love to be able to charge somewhere near basic campsite prices. However the time and cost of setting up an empty field with even the most basic facilities and then taking them down again afterwards is too much at the moment. Hopefully, as I get more efficient at doing this I will be able to get prices a bit lower. Also not keen to compete directly with other established campsites … clients are paying a premium for their own entire field to themselves in a unique location – where as a standard campsite makes money by allocating as many units as it can onto the available land.

89angela – Thanks for the comments – you sound like the perfect family group for this … shame about the price issue. As soon as I can wrestle those prices down I’ll let you know.

Smashing69 – Two very good points about facilities and I have to admit they are basic in these early stages but will only improve in time.

EHU … of course I can provide a generator if necessary but have found that a battery bank has been sufficient for the weekend camps so far. A weeks camping would be a different matter. Anyway was hoping people might be able do without the TV for a couple of days.

Drinking Water Regs … looked into these bit too complicated for me at this stage! Decided to keep it simple and I currently have a water tank (an approved drinking water container) with fresh water for cooking and cleaning but also advise people to bring some bottled water for drinking. The water in the tank is perfectly safe and is only in there for a couple of days … most people are quite happy to use it for drinking as well … but it’s their choice!

Dawn200 – “Noise and Disturbance” - thanks for this … always good to have a different perspective and I hadn’t realised the impression I was giving. I guess the emphasis on managing noise and disturbance is really to do with the local community. The whole idea is dependent on the farmers being willing to rent out their land – the rural community here is a close knit thing … one bad experience or too many complaints from neighbours … word would spread very quickly and I would be left with no fields to camp in! However … take your point … making it sound like a rave is not going to help either.

Second point – target markets – obviously trying to appeal to as many as possible – particularly any group that has difficulty getting into a standard campsite. However, from what we’ve done so far the market seems to be late 20’s – 30 something Festival goers. They are perfectly happy to “rough-it” for a weekend … it’s what they do anyway and they bring just the right amount of camping gear for a weekend stay. The fact that they can afford to go to a festival! … usually means they are happy to pay a premium slightly different experience.

Singles camp … another good idea … will have to have a think about how to organise it.
Romantic get-away just for two I thought would also be possible … no groups, reduce the price a bit - just provide a luxury Bell Tent with woodburner and all the trimmings – v.private, v.exclusive – invigorating walk on the fells, hearty meal in local pub … back to cosy Bell Tent for romantic evening under the stars! – sounds lovely!

Oldham – Just loads of good advice … won’t go into it now but thanks … splitting the website up, locating near wedding venues (also thanks thehintons!) – all brilliant. cheers

I also had a thought that you might be able to market it to groups that would go to the Lake District to do their activity anyway - e.g. moutain bikers, hill walkers, mountain climbers, kayakers - that sort of thing.  For example if the camp was near to a particular Wainwright walk, or a mountain bike course, or a well-know climb you could use that to help target your advertising to the people that would want to go there for that reason anyway.....give them an alternative place to stay and wrap it all up together with their activity + camp, a bit like say for example, people advertise surfing weekends in Cornwall where they get their activity plus accommodation all as one package.  Just a thought!

Last time we went away in the uk we were 6 families - so that was about 25 of us. I presume due to access it would be tent camping only? and what about access if you don't have a 4x4?

I've been reading and thinking for a while now. I think the cost is the main issue for me, but the idea seems wonderful especially the middle of no where bit and the group tent for getting together in.

Do you offer a discount if everyone brings their own tents for sleeping in? Most of the families we go camping with already have their own tents so would not splash out for something they didn't need. The families we know who already camp would love to get together on essentially a private site where you didn't need to worry who else was around and where/who the kids were talking to etc.

And for those people who desperately need their EHU can you invest in some solar panels/battery to generate electricity. Not really something I know about but they do exist I'm sure! Several of the families (mums) we camp with have to have a hair drier in the morning! They camp without an EHU but use the power in the shower blocks for the essential hair drier!!!

Good luck and let me know if the costs come down!!!!!

    Hi Toby
Good for you, I really hope it works for you... I think the whole cost issue (not sure what you are charging) shouldnt be to much of a problem. I think there are many groups who would be prepared to pay a bit more for the options you are providing. Its the location thats so good, the fact you will know all your neighbours and they will all be like minded.
If you can get other websites to give you a link this will help also...You might want to put a links page on your site.
    Good luck
