Just back from a midweek break in Aberfeldy, first outing for our Vermont in 18 months and we have lots of black +++++ cris cross marks on one side of the tent. I am assuming this is mildew. Was pretty sure tent was dry when we packed it and it is kept in the house so it is kept in a dry atmosphere. Any advice would be welcome. The marks are on the outer tent.

We have the same problem and i keep looking for the answer on here, I have seen many mention Milton Fluid, and i assume this is the stuff you use for babies to sterlise equipment, but noone has said if you use it neat or dilute it, sorry I can't be of anymore help to you.

mildew can occur if your groundsheet has moisture on it.

Mlton mould and mildew spray worked for us, but they do suggest weaker solutions of milton baby fluid and water mixtures first.

Tent is still useable, i wouldn't worry about it really, just make sure u kill the spores!

I wouldnt advise using mold and mildew spray on an outer tent , but have used it on inners . Its very strong bleach and will probably damage the waterproofing and might even take the colour out .
Milton baby sterilising stuff has often been recommended to treat it , use it in the dilution it says for baby bottles.
you wont get the marks off but it will stop it spreading .

Dry in sunshine preferably . Make sure your groundsheet and guylines are perfectly bone dry when packing up in future , as these can take longer than the tent to dry .

if the tent is dry , but guylines are still wet when packing up on site ., untie them and dry at home , but dont forget to re attach them before packing it away . You dont want to have to be tying them back on site if pitching in the rain .

As others have said use the diluted milton as you would for the babies bottles but rinse afterward with fresh water. Do this as many times as required but remember it may bleach if over done and not rinsed.

NOTHING works. It will all work to kill it and stop the spread but the stain will stay, believe me i've tried EVERYTHING.....diluted bleach, milton, bathroom mildew spray, specialist mildew tent spray etc etc. Just put it on stop the spread, stress for a bit and mourn later!

I have to say I presumed it was the inner where the mold was because of the reference to t shapes.  If it was the outer would use fabsil tent cleaner....

I have heard that you should only use a mild diluted Milton mixture, it won’t clean it but it should stop the mould spreading

Good point just mentioned with regards to guy lines and groundsheets, they will always be moist when breaking camp, and that could contribute to mould forming, just because the tent is dry does not mean the guys are, and to help keep the groundsheet dry use a footprint groundsheet as well, when folding the tent up I try and make sure that none of the guy ropes are folded inside the tent, but laid on the outer edges and stuffed into polythene bags or small bin liners just in case.

Allthough we only have a small garden I have rigged up 2 parallel washing lines that I drape the tent and footprint over after EVERY camping trip regardless if it has been packed away wet or dry, obviously with our weather it depends on a dry/sunny day, luckily we have a spare room that we can also spread it out in as well just in case of bad weather

Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather, only ill prepared campers !!
