Please can someone help me,  There are 8 of us going to France in May bank holiday for a week and i am trying to work out what gas to take, the little canisters or hire a small gas bottle for the week.  We are going to be having a few BBQs as well but not sure on how much I would need etc - so if anyone has an idea,I would love to find out.  Thanks

You can't get propane refills in France so if you get a bottle make sure it's CampingGaz, either a 907 or a 904. You can get refills for these on some campsites and in bigger supermarkets.

As to how much, how long is a piece of string? Size and duration of BBQs will determine the amount of gas used. Also, what are you going to be doing the rest of the cooking on? I find a 907 lasts this family of four for about two weeks of kettle, some breakfasts, dinners and one or two BBQs on our teensy gas BBQ.

depends how you are getting there. Eurotunnel dont allow gas on board I think. Take a big enough bottle to last you for week, nothing worse than running out and not been able to get any.

Go to the first hypermarket you see, buy a gas bottle and regulator half the cost of a camping gaz one here. If you run out you can get a refill. Then use it every year when you go to france, you could even lend it to any friends going abroad.

I have just done a quick search on a french price comparison site, my french is not that good anymore but this liteweight bottle is 6KG butan, a regultor is €11, bottle deposit is €20, and refill is €10. I think as normal UK is over charging.

You op ain't very clear, do you mean between you all you are taking some small cartridge stoves but you want to take a barbecue & 1 gas bottle? you need 2 bottles really, if you only have one you will be stuck if it runs out at night halfway thru your barby.

If you can find a 7.5kg Calor bottle take that & that should do you. Otherwise take a couple of Campingaz 907s as you can change these in France. You need to get bottles off a carboot sale or council tip. If you buy Calor or Campingaz bottles off gas supplier its £30+contents.

Its difficult to advise as you don't really say how much you will be using it. Buying French bottles only makes sense if you intend to take long hols in France for yrs to come.

Thanks for all your ideas, I think what I will try and do is to get a 907 in France and then bring it back, my OH is worried about driving from Calais to Poitiers - I know what a long drive!!!!! with the gas in the car, so i think that I will get one from a local supermarket.

Thanks for your help.

You can buy full 907s in any large French supermarket for about 44€. I would buy the correct regulator in the UK at half French price tho.

Last year we took our own 907. I priced the new bottle up in superU and they were pretty much same price as UK.

You can take gas bottles on the Eurotunnel. It is gas fuel conversions for cars that are not permitted. They will check that your bottle is switched off.

Thanks, will certainly let you all know the cost of the gas bottles.  I think that I will get it over there as we are taking soooooo much stuff with us including english sausages and bacon, which obviously wont be there on the way back so will have room for the gas bottle!!!!

Well finally I have managed a bargain -  Go Outdoors for the bottle and gas

£28.50 for the bottle and

£18.50 for the gas

Sooooooo much less than other places.  I heard back from france and it is just as  expensive over there, so have bought from Go Outdoor.

hope this helps everyone
