We are heading off tomorrow (hopefully) on our first ever family camping trip and the forecast is GRIM, GRIM, GRIM!!!!!!!!  Am hoping that it doesnt put OH off as he wasnt keen on the idea really in the first place. I am also hoping we can fit everything in. I have put it all out in the spare room and it looks like it will need two cars - Whoops!!!!

Wish us luck ( and a break in the clouds please!!)

I assumed men would prefer the outdoors but i frequently read on here the female been more enthusiastic i was in the same boat but he has now come around brilliantly .

Good luck on your camping just take your time it's not a race, most of all enjoy it.

I have found dealing with heavy rain when camping is 50% attitude 50% preparation. Our first camping trip was miserable in the rain, it would have been easy to give it up. So glad we didn't - we have never had a dry camping trip and love it. As others have said waterproofs and wellies. I bought a basic clothes rail (£7.99 Argos see link) some hooks (25p for 2 in Ikea) to go over it, coat hangers would also do the job, it gives you somewhere to hang the wet clothes, during a dry period put it outside. This year we invested in an extension, absolutely brilliant, can cook undercover, leave wet clothes and wellies outside of the tent or sit and chill in rain without getting wet. If you decide camping is for you I would really recommend you invest in one but give it a go first.
Enjoy your trip.

Thanks everyone.

Auntyell - we have actually got a porch (gelert horizon) so we will be doing just as you suggest I hope! Am liking the idea of a clothes rail for drying things, top tip!! I am sure that we will be fine. The kids ( 3 and 5 year old boys) are SO excited. We are going with a family who have been camping a few times before so not out on our own completely.  I am feeling giddy about it even if it does rain. Bring it on!!!!!!!

Just got to pack everything tomorrow morning - hmmmmmm!

yes pack the hot water bottles!

and hats!

and loads of blankets! you'll be fine

Just wear everything if there's no room...

It might not turn out so bad.  Our forecast was rubbish, and yes it did rain and got really windy at times, but in between we sat in the sun and even managed a campfire on a couple of nights.

although i seem to have a 'demon' in my firepit...

Yes it's a good idea to pack hot water bottles. And also if you have some take your thermals, you can wear them as pyjamas.

Anyone ever used Cold Vests? I use them for training in, and I took mine away at the weekend to wear in bed if I got chilly, and ended up wearing just the vest! They pack up REALLY small and do not need ironing, ever!

Have a great weekend, whatever the weather. I'll be camping in Derbyshire - just nice for that north-easterly they're mentioning! Hot water bottle is a definite.

Beautiful flames in that fire pit - I sometimes burn driftwood and the salts in it can give a gorgeous blue-green.
