I've been lurking here for about a week and I have to say, you all seem like a very friendly bunch and I've learned lots about camping and equipment.
We bought our tent last year at the end of the season and have waited all winter to use it. We've now been 3 times this year and it's fair to say we've got the bug. We absolutely love it and it's so good to be able to just take off for a weekend.
I'm also glad to see I'm not the only one who's addicted to equipment and all the completely unnecessary 'must haves'
Anyway, since you've all been so nice, I'm afraid you're stuck with me!
Just a quick question, should I have a fire blanket or fire extinguisher in my tent? Any suggestions?
Welcome, Benexto! Glad you've joined this band of happy campers!
I can't advise you on extinguishers, as I don't have one yet, though it is on the list, so I'll be watching for recommendations on that too.
We got our fire blanket from The Range. It was something really reasonable, like £7.99, I think. They had bigger ones for around £12, but this one is 110 cms., which I judge to be big enough to throw over a pan fire or a flare from a suitcase stove! Any crisis more exciting than that and I would probably just evacuate the tent! Really fast!
And as Helen says, a bucket of water by the tent door is a must.
Also new to camping and for some reason I bought our fire extinguisher the same day as my tent (OH has more sense than me i guess) Dont use the bucket of water though...as of yet. Any way welcome!

Great - you've joined the mad house, don't hesitate to post queries as this lot are really happy to help you with good advice and tips only gained through experience.
I would add that it can be very easy to get carried away - so it's not worth going mad then not being able to afford the £15 - £25 (depending on site) fee per night to go away an enjoy all your yummy purchases!
Our fire extinguisher is a Kidde brand. Bought this one for it's simple, easy to operate system. Never had to use it yet, but it always goes camping with us
A CO2 exstinguisher as it can be used for electrical as well as other fueled fires (petrol, diesil, oils), or a ABC powder, powder can be used for everything which apart from cokking oil and fat which you can use a fire blanket for pan fires and other small fires alike.
Fire exstinguished should be annually checked as over time they can loose pressure, abit like a how a baloon goes down over time. And last thing you want is a fire and a exstinguisher with no pressure.
Some exstinguisher's have a pressure gauge on them so you can always check and if you use a CO2 fire exstinguisher aim the horn at the fire and then let go and fire never hold the horn while using as it freezes.
Hope this helps

Always good to have a fire extingusher, we keep one clipped to the pole in the kitchen tent, it has a pressure gauge that we check each time we pack, also most camping shops sell marked red fire buckets, handy to have sitting outside your tent, takes up no room, fire blanket a must, again just place in a handy spot, it's a bit like insurance you hope to never use it, but could also help if another camper gets into trouble.
Welcome to the ukcampsite , glad your enjoying your camping........it's funny how it gets a grip on you ( far better to get away than sitting watching the tv every weekend).....lol
