Hello, I'm here to pick your brains again (yes, again!).

We've just put up our tent in the garden to air it out and its manky.  What is the best way to clean it inside and out?  There are quite a few big dirty marks on it from putting it down in bad weather and it smells really musty.  We used it over last bank holiday weekend, but this is the first chance we've had to get it out again.

I was considering whacking the bedroom pod in the washing machine on a cool gentle wash... do you think this would damage it?  I was thinking the polycotton would be OK, but was concerned about the groundsheet bit.  The pod also has a small patch of mildew on the side which I was going to clean with very diluted bleach - again, is this OK to do?

Obviously I can just use household cleaners on the ground sheet of the tent - I'll sweep it out and give it a good mop with Flash, but what about the actual fabric of the tent?  I won;t be going anywhere to buy any specialist cleaner for a while, and was wondering if you thought washing powder in water would do the job?  Or if you can recommend anything else which I can get from the supermarket?

Any cleaning advice much appreciated!!!

Thank you muchly, Dawn x

Hi,

I'm not much use but I was coming on to ask the exact same question! We've just bought a 2nd hand Outwell Montana 6 and it needs a bloody good clean, I thought I should check before I attack it with detergents galaore!

No detergents - even on the sig

Buy some soap flake washing powder and use that with warm water BUT rinse and rinse and rinse to get it all out.

OR

I like Grangers tent and awning cleaner but again rinse out lots

No harm in putting the inners in the machine on the delicate wash with a drop or 3 of Milton (or the like)

If it's general muck and dirt give it a good brush down first with a softish dustpan brush before you soak it and clean it.

Inner : Treat the mould with a drop of bleach ,if it has black mold spores, neat bleach may get the stain off completely, but rinse off after a few minutes, pop in the machine , quick wash program with non bio powder /liquid and an extra rinse, short spin,to make sure its all out .

dry on the line, turn inside out when dry to make sure the corners of the groundheet are dried too. Air it indoors hung over a bedroom door overnight before storing away again.

if the inners too big for the machine, wait for a nice day and wash it in a paddling pool.make sure its very well rinsed though, have the hosepipe running over it , so no residue can affect the fly if they touch each other when wet .

NO DETERGENT WHATSOEVER on THE FLYSHEET .even kids blowing bubbles can affect the waterproofing. I would just use warm water and a new sponge on the marks if they dont brush off. then hose it completely when pithed and leave to dry .

The groundsheet can be brushed down with soapy water and rinsed off.
Dont pack the groundsheet away in the bag with the tent, as its very often the mud on it that causes the musty smell on the tent. put the grounsheet in a binliner and clean it at home .
next time, dont leave it so long before airing it, as mold will start to form in about 48hours.
