Hi,

we sold our caravan last year and are going back under canvass. We have narrowed down our choice of tents to either a Khyam Cleveland 6 or an Outwell Montana 6

it seems a big price difference for two similar tents & you get a canopy with the khyam & its an extra with the Outwell.

Can anybody share experiences with either tent ?

I'm sure that you will get positive responses for each, but there are a heck of a lot of people on here who think the Montana is the bees knees!  For that reason alone, I would lean towards the Monty...

If the bedroom configuration suits you, that Khyam looks a steal. It's 5000HH, sewn in groundsheet, comes with the canopy and they are highly respected manufacturer. Whilst we have had 3 Outwells and have been more than happy with them I would be sorely tempted by the Cleveland 6 if I was in the market.

The annoying thing about Khyam tents is being able to see one in the flesh. Very few camping stores have them (I believe this is due to past financial problems) so they are pretty much online only purchases.

Whilst their tents look good, and the specs are good, I would always want to see one (indeed any tent) pitched before buying.

This is a real pity, as they do look decent tents.

We have a Khyam tent and would highly recommend them as being very well made and great value for money.

We've got 3 Khyams an old Ridgidome XXL that we've had for 7 years, a Ranger which I use for solo weekends and we've just got the Cleveland's big brother the Aspen. We were 'dyed in the wool' Ridgidome folk 'til we saw the Aspen, we lusted after it for a while and then saw one on The Bay for £349 brand new from JR Leisure in Leicester, we went down there and bought it plus the stone protector footprint GS and  the whole shebang was ours for change out of £380. We got the carpet for £52 (inc s&h) from Khyam direct. We've pitched it once and, once we get the hang of the pole and sleeve mallarkey, we'll be right. There is a pitching video of a Vango 600 something or other on Youtube which is very similar in pitching style and it's  given us some good ideas for shortcuts so I'm confident we can cut down the pitch time considerably. Plus points for us is the cavernous space ( I reckon we could park our PT Cruiser INSIDE the tent while we unload it) the ZIG (seven years of pegging mudflaps and laying out groundsheets !) and the airyness of the thing, it's got 11 bloomin' windows and yes.. there's just two of us ! Have a look at the pics on Tent Reviews of the Clevelands and pick up a bargain from JR Liesure.. I think they still have Cleveland 6's for £299 and £6 shipping. I'm a Khyam man.. can you tell ?  I'll get me coat.....

Khyam Ontario 8 here. Got the footprint and also the carpet and porch. It's in it's fourth season now and still going strong. I'm going to clean it properly the next times it's pitched with the Nik Techwash or whatever it is called now. It's having the guylines replaced with flouresents and also the glow in the dark cleats.

Easy to pitch and it's stood up to some battering from the elements.

Highly recommended....... but, I'm looking at a Monty 6 or Bear Lake 6 now as I think it's time to change after four years.

Not much help, but as a good launch pad to get back into camping then I'd recommend Khyam.

We have had Khyams for years ,one of them for 12 years now and it is still going strong  we also have had 2 Outwells, one of which was sent back last year because it had loads of faults and it was a brand new model our current Outwell is a polycotton one so it can't really be compared . If the Khyam suits your needs as much as the Outwell one I would go with the Khyam if its cheaper, they aren't any worse or better than Outwell.

Well if you read my blog you would have seen plenty of pictures of the Monty, and I maybe biased because i have one. 2 reasons for the Monty, firstly the awning rather than the extension is fantastic, the whole front opens up and its a lot longer than the extension. Second I never had a khyam so i don't know but with the Monty all the side windows have blinds and screens or open right up for maximum ventilation.
The khyam is excellent value and a lot of tent for the money, but will the resale value be a lot less in years to come. Monty on ebay sells.

I'm delighted with our big Khyam (XL Excelsior) and would have another like a shot, but that's one of the QE ones.

It seems very well made and stood up to strong winds and 12 days of rain at Hayfield the other year without any mishaps.

Resale value ?? A Khyam is for life, not just for camping !!
