Hello all, I don't want to appear thick but I probably sound it lol...

We're relatively new to camping so I don't know everything....we've bought an erde 102 and I'd like to know if we need to buy anything to keep it secure on the campsites?  What do you do with yours? 

I don’t do anything with mine and just leave it on the site with no security fitted, but a lot of people want the peice of mind of some sort of deterrent

But bear in mind state of the art security could cost as much as your trailer

trailer hitch lock

you could start with a hitch lock that stops somebody hooking the trailer to a car

wheel clamp

then there is a wheel clamp, or a heavy duty chain lock

the first two are a visual detterants and would not stop you picking the trailer up and putting it in the back of a van if you can find a fixed object like a tree or large post you could lock the trailer to that with a heavy duty chain lock 

but as i said if somebody wants to steal your trailer then the probably will regardless of what you do to it 

This wont visually deter anyone from trying to take a trailer but it will alert everyone around that something is not right if someone does try to move it.

We have a small battery powered personal alarm with an incredibly loud output when triggered (The type carried in a handbag). The unit has a cord attached to a pin which locates in the alarm when set but when pulled from the alarm it sets it off.

Once we have pitched and the trailer is empty and not going to be moved again I position the alarm box with Velcro against the back of the axle box section behind one of the wheels under the trailer with the pin cord facing down. I then use a small tent peg to attach the cord to the ground below the trailer behind the wheel so it cannot be clearly seen.

Now if the trailer is moved or even lifted up by the hitch the cord and pin are pulled from the box and the alarm goes off. By the time they have found the box and pin cord and relocated the pin to stop the alarm most of the site will know something is not right but I would expect that by that time the undesirables would have decided to try elsewhere.

Sounds good to me. Will get my alarm looked out for our first outing with trailer at the weekend. Was also going to lock to nearest tree too.

Hi Crazyb I have an Erde 142 and for about £3 or so you can buy a lock which fits into the hitch and prevents anyone from hitching up or from unhitching from your tow bar if you stop at a services etc also available from a company called western towing attachements is a ground anchor which screws into the ground and then allows you to lock the hitch to it, it cannot be removed from the ground without unscrewing and to do that with the trailer locked to it would require picking the trailer up and unscrewing, my trailer normaly sits behind the tent and if it did get stolen then I am fully insured through the camping and caravan clubs insurance which is the safest way of protecting your investment.
