We do the same, Helen. We have everything we need bar tent, bed/bedding, stove/gas bottle and our clothes in those two crates. We just get them out of the loft and put them straight in the car. It means we can pack and load really quickly.

I'm trying not to think about it. Someone called me a minger last month for not washing out my teapot every time I used it, you know. But even I don't pee in my saucepans..,....!
Perhaps she thought you used your teapot instead.
I'm firmly of the opinion that doing any more than rinsing a teapot ruins the tea. That patina of ancient tannin adds to the flavour, I'm sure.

Victoria, I really do think your set up is quite restrained so I wouldn't worry too much.
We also use a set of drawers and I much prefer them over the separate lidded boxes that we used to use. I found that I was always grovelling around on the floor digging around for things and then there was the trauma of trying to fit it all back in to get the lids on to go home!
Drawers are, I'm sure, less efficient on space but it's a concession I'm prepared to make. Everything fits in, has a place and is easy to get to and it's just a case of lifting it in and out of the trailer.
Another fan of the plastic drawers here. One set for a short trip with just the two of us, Two sets for whole tribe coming along for a week or more. With tqo sets we also take an old cupboard door to lay across the top. It makes a huge work surface and is very stable. We have actually cut a hole in it for a washing up bowl, so we really do take the kitchen sink! (See the photo in my profile)

I like the idea of drawers as being a really useful way of organising your camp kitchen, but how the hell do you get it into a small car and roofbox?

What an interesting discussion.
I have a plastic box which has everything I need whether its for a weekend or 4 weeks.
Mine has a double skillet in it, in which I have an Aldi set of pans and inside those the breakfast bowls. I then have a washing up bowl/tupperware box which has the mugs, wine glasses, cutlery, cooking utensils etc. Packed around those fits the tumblers, windup lantern, washingup liquid, scrubbing brush, pegs, line, etc etc.
However, I have just bought a 3-box drawer unit as having everything packed so 'neatly' does take time and I wanted something that would just lift in and out of the car ready to 'use'. DH isn't convinced - its bigger than the box and space is at a premium. We have yet to do a 'test run' to see if it will even fit in.
I am also trying to think of other ways of making the packing up quicker... stuffing sleeping bags always seems time consuming so I am thinking of just getting a huge vacuum bag and vacuuming them between sites?
Any ideas grateful accepted as we will be doing a lot of site moving this year compared to normal.

On the homeward journey, we often leave the sleeping bags opened out and spread over the luggage are of the car before anything else goes in. They go straight in the washing machine, so it doesn't matter if they get a bit grotty.

Christine - forget the vacuum bags, get some good bin bags. Suck out the air, twist the tops and either knot or use a bit of duct tape. Just rip them open at the next site and use a new one when you leave.

You've just gone and put that notion into my head! I'll not settle now until I have another set of plastic drawers....I'm curious, what kind of things do store in them?
I've only got three people in my party, and the car I have (hatchback) has a split rear seat, 60/40. I'll collapse the larger part which gives me a relatively flat surface to pack on, and I've already discovered that the set of plastic drawers fits neatly between the surface and the roof. However I have to make sure I don't obscure my rear view mirror. The thing I like the most is the drawer set has a footprint of not much bigger than a sheet of A4 printer, so that's a pretty good use of space for me.

Simple Version (one set)
Top small drawer; Cutlery and utensils, cling film, tin foil
2nd small drawer: Repair bits and pieces, kitchen wipes and cleaning stuff, matches
Next larger drawer down: Food (or lamps, and bits and pieces which are generally 'out' while we're camping - then fill drawer with food once we're there)
Lower large drawer, saucepans, plates, bowls etc.
When I take both sets of drawers I have separate cutlery drawer and utensil drawer. One of the larger drawers is full of 'wet weather games' for the kids. Can easily fill two drawers with food - usually one has mostly drinks stuff in.
It's slightly different each time, depending on who's going.

Okay, I've been sitting here reading about these drawers for days. They're getting into my brain! Now I know for a fact that they will not under any circumstances fit my packing system in the Mondeo when I go lightweight camping and anyway, I'm happy with what I do there. But it does occur to me that one of the shallow 2-drawer art type sets of drawers might be a solution to an ongoing niggle I have with packing the trailer tent. I will need to take some measurements, then go and wander round Poundstretcher .....
So congratulations ladies and gents. It's not often I get seduced into buying "sideways" type kit, lol.

I have used plastic packing crates. They got large, heavy and annoying. Everything seemed to get lost in them as well as it rolled about. I also used wooden crates. They were great, 'because they doubled as seats/tables. They were fing big & heavy tho. I currently use an old cantilever toolbox as the 'catering box'.
I manage to squeeze spices/condiments, cutlery, 'brew kit', wipes/kitchen roll and even a small cookpot. I will be adding an MSR to it soon.
I expect other people (& me!) to bring their own plate/bowl/mug*. Other than that I am sorted. I have cooked for 20 people out of that blue box.
* = I also lie. The PUP has these things in it. The car boot doesn't tho.
------------- My opinion is worth exactly what you paid for it.

Val, like everything its personal trial and error. I am fairly sure that sets of drawers are less space efficient than a box re the amount that can be packed into them for transport but drawers do work far better for me in terms of on site usage. They fit well within the van-like interior of my Berlingo, but might not work so well within, say, a small curvey hatchback.

One would fit in my estate car, no problem. Just that the box fits better. But when all's said and done, I'm still intending to go out and buy one (or two!) for the TT. My point being...this place is contagious even to the most resistant, lol.
