We bought a pup tent last year when DD was 12 and wanted to bring a friend camping with her. The thought of listening to the inane chatter and giggling until the wee small hours was enough to make the extra outlay worthwhile. The dog went in with them, and they had a whale of a time.
This year, we have already been to Cornwall for four nights (without dog, she is of an age to prefer the comforts of home, being walked and fed by a kind neighbour, to a five hour car journey in hot weather). I have to admit that I wondered whether DD (now 13) would be ok in a tent on her own, but she loved it. Having said that, being pitched next to our tent meant that summoning us during the night was no problem at all.
Hints - dog is good. Lots of light sources are better. We have a little LED camping lamp with a night light setting that she leaves on all night. It's doesn't take vast amounts of battery, and is enough to keep her happy.
We went on a one-nighter to Norfolk this weekend, and in the interests of keeping things easy we left the pup tent at home - won't make that mistake again. Something tells me we are now definately a two tent family!
