A self inflating mattress is just that. You should not fill it with extra air, you could separate the foam from the skin. All self inflating mattresses (even the thermas) are not designed so that your elbow could not feel the ground when leaned on. If you feel the ground when you are lying flat, you have either bought a poor quality mattress or not allowed enough time for it to SELF inflate. I personally think the Vango ultra lite £16 (520gms) are up there with £80 thermarests, and thats because I have both.
This is a common misconception about self inflating mats. The Thermarest FAQ page says this (emphasis mine):
[snip]...Always allow self-inflating mattresses to inflate on their own as much as possible, then just top them off with a few breaths at the end for added firmness....[/snip] (taken from the "Will moisture build-up and ruin my mattress if I blow into it?" question).
