We first took DD last July and she was 6mths old then again when she was 7.5mths.
We had her in a travel cot with flannelette sheet on the bottom, DD in a long sleeved vest, babygro, 2.5 tog bag. Then when DH and I went to bed (at about 9pm!) we covered her with a doubled over fleecy blanket. She slept fine. Her little hands were freezing though which shocked me awake when she woke for a feed (I BF), but she wouldn't keep mitts on.
We also took her room thermometer so that I could keep an eye on the temperature. When we took her the second time we had a fan heater that clicked on and off for a few nights as the temp dropped off the scale (below 10 degrees C) and she was getting too weighed down with all the blankets! This heated the pod to about 18 degrees, then clicked off.
When we go in August I'll be doing the same, but this time (long sleeved vest) she'll have some thick PJ's on with socks, her 2.5tog bag and blankets as necessary. I don't think we will have to use the fan heater now because I'll also take a cot duvet (which are about 4 tog) with us also, so with all that she has got on, blanket and duvet she should be warm enough.
this website http://www.forparentsbyparents.com/index.html?pn=913 is handy at understanding tog ratings of clothing and blankets etc. Although at such a young age just go by how cool their chest/back is depending on if they are on their backs or fronts (check their back if they lay on their front). If they feel warm, then all is OK.
In my experience DD would always (and still does) wake up when she is cold, but I also have the advantage now in that she can tell me she is hot, with a, "MiMi (mummy) Hot" and she proceeds to blow on herself and flap her arms around!
Oh, and think about yourself. Ensure you have everything at hand for waking in the night, such as extra layers, flask of water and powder ready if you bottle feed along with nappies and wipes etc if you need to do a change. I normally sleep in bed socks and PJ's, but I also had my slippers to put on, a fleece and a blanket to put over me and DD when she was feeding to make sure we were warm as 20mins sat still at 2am is no joke!
I also had a lantern which I flicked on when I had to get up and placed in the corner of the pod on the floor, so that it gave off enough light so that I could see what I was doing, but without having full glare.
Also, if you baby is sleeping through by the time you go and you use a travel cot, you may find they wake earlier due to the sun rising. I get round this by putting a dark coloured thin cloth (I used a dark red pashmina last year) over the travel cot to create a shade. This also helps in retaining some heat. This year I'm going to investigate getting some black netting/thin cloth to peg onto the outside of the bedroom pods to ensure they are all dark. I couldn't do the sheet on top of the travel cot anymore because DD would just pull it off and think it was game!
Either way, I was treated well by other campers and my fondest memory of camping so far is being sat in my canopy at 6.30am in Thetford Forest CCC site BF DD watching the site 'wake up'.
