Anyone got any bright ideas for babies / toddlers who don't like grobags? My little ones were great in them until they could crawl and both hated them from then on. DD is 16 months now and kicks her covers off. Unsure what to use instead of a grobag. Pondering one of those sleeping pods (gelert?) to give her some room to move?

Weve taken our 2 kids camping at around 3 to 6 months depending on the weather never botherd with a travel cot just a childs mummy sleeping bag tooked under to make it half size and most inner tents are like giant play pens for toddlers if you keep the zipps to the top .they love being close to mum and dad so no screaming to get our attention . Just think through your  feeding routein at home and work out how to do it at 3am with out Ehu ! ease make a flask up for warming the bottle . Our eldist learnt to walk while on a camping trip

Cheers for the great advice everyone, its interesting to see how you all got on. Baby sleeping bag seems a great idea for later, I'll have to price them up. we have already bought a travel cot and it'll fit in our tent ok, baby will be used to it by the time we go camping so hopefully should be ok.

I would second whoever said to sleep close to them, as apart from anything you'll keep a closer eye on temp. When they're little they're not going anywhere so just make sure your sleeping pod is baby-proof, obviously. I have never taken a travel cot, it's far too big, but I've camped with all 4 of mine being fairly small.

It's when they start to crawl that it's REALLY hard work to camp, as they get filthy, so that time till they learn to be steady walking that I tend to avoid.

We are due to have our first baby in november and will probably start camping again when he is about 5 months old, but only because of the time of year and we wouldnt have done anyway.  If he had been born in summer he would be camping earlier, lol.

To the person asking about babies who dont like the baby sleeping bags - my mum used the big fluffy/furry sleepsuits on my little brother and sister.  She put them a vest, a babygrow and then one of the fluffy sleepsuits on top with a blanket.

Our son was just over two & our daughter was 9 months old when they went camping for the first time, Our youngest was 12 weeks old when she first camped the following year. I used all in one fleecy night suits, to keep them warm (as & when needed). We didn't have EHU either when we first started camping, but only went in summer months then though.

We first took DD last July and she was 6mths old then again when she was 7.5mths.

We had her in a travel cot with flannelette sheet on the bottom, DD in a long sleeved vest, babygro, 2.5 tog bag. Then when DH and I went to bed (at about 9pm!) we covered her with a doubled over fleecy blanket. She slept fine. Her little hands were freezing though which shocked me awake when she woke for a feed (I BF), but she wouldn't keep mitts on.

We also took her room thermometer so that I could keep an eye on the temperature. When we took her the second time we had a fan heater that clicked on and off for a few nights as the temp dropped off the scale (below 10 degrees C) and she was getting too weighed down with all the blankets! This heated the pod to about 18 degrees, then clicked off.

When we go in August I'll be doing the same, but this time (long sleeved vest) she'll have some thick PJ's on with socks, her 2.5tog bag and blankets as necessary. I don't think we will have to use the fan heater now because I'll also take a cot duvet (which are about 4 tog) with us also, so with all that she has got on, blanket and duvet she should be warm enough.

this website  http://www.forparentsbyparents.com/index.html?pn=913 is handy at understanding tog ratings of clothing and blankets etc. Although at such a young age just go by how cool their chest/back is depending on if they are on their backs or fronts (check their back if they lay on their front). If they feel warm, then all is OK.

In my experience DD would always (and still does) wake up when she is cold, but I also have the advantage now in that she can tell me she is hot, with a, "MiMi (mummy) Hot" and she proceeds to blow on herself and flap her arms around!

Oh, and think about yourself. Ensure you have everything at hand for waking in the night, such as extra layers, flask of water and powder ready if you bottle feed along with nappies and wipes etc if you need to do a change. I normally sleep in bed socks and PJ's, but I also had my slippers to put on, a fleece and a blanket to put over me and DD when she was feeding to make sure we were warm as 20mins sat still at 2am is no joke!

I also had a lantern which I flicked on when I had to get up and placed in the corner of the pod on the floor, so that it gave off enough light so that I could see what I was doing, but without having full glare.

Also, if you baby is sleeping through by the time you go and you use a travel cot, you may find they wake earlier due to the sun rising. I get round this by putting a dark coloured thin cloth (I used a dark red pashmina last year) over the travel cot to create a shade. This also helps in retaining some heat. This year I'm going to investigate getting some black netting/thin cloth to peg onto the outside of the bedroom pods to ensure they are all dark. I couldn't do the sheet on top of the travel cot anymore because DD would just pull it off and think it was game!

Either way, I was treated well by other campers and my fondest memory of camping so far is being sat in my canopy at 6.30am in Thetford Forest CCC site BF DD watching the site 'wake up'.

I have done it with 2 of mine at about 8 months (and crawling)

I personally just have them next to me on a mattress, both times they have ended up next to me in my bed inside my double sleeping bag.  The last time was early may and it snowed on the welsh hills by us  but I can honestly say the baby was warm enough.

I keep  the sleeping pod clear of anything but have a bag with a few quiet toys next to us so that when they wake very early (as they do at home) they can crawl / play while I (pretend) to sleep

I think it was a lot less camping with little ones than it was in a holiday cottage, as they had so much they could damage I could never relax.

Hi, I didnt take my kids camping until the youngest was 3 and wish I had done it earlier. As a parent myself I personally wouldnt be bothered about hearing a bit of baby noise on the campsite. Older kids playing on the swings and slides at 11pm would bother me more! Hubby would be fine because he never heard our two crying in the middle of the night when they were babies anyway.
