Ive just purchased a tent and need to check it over, its doesnt fit in my back garden like my old one and I need to test pitch it make sure everythings there and no manufacturing defects, can I pitch it in the local park? I think it should only take around 2 hours so in my eyes shouldnt be a problem if I keep it to the side out the way. Does anyone have any info or experience on this and is its legal as I dont want a fine from the council or any other problems if I was to do this.
As long as you don't sleep in it, or leave it up for any length of time, I can't see you having any problems. Apart from a legion of kids giving you the Spanish Inquisition and wanting to look inside.
Public places are meant for public use so I cant see why using a bit of grass to test pitch a tent would be a problem.
Sleeping in it however would be different.
But as Richard said, be prepared for kids asking "what are you doing"etc. Like it isnt obvious?
We have no garden so use public spaces all the time without any problem apart from getting slightly annoyed when asked what we are doing for the 212th time :)
I have done this in the past, check the park bye-laws as some bye-laws specify that the driving of stakes into the ground is prohibited as a catch all for this type of activity.
I tend to use the area where the carnival and circus set up when they visit - if it is good enough for them etc. - rather than one of the bowling greens
one time we did get advice from one of the more eccentric passers by that camping in the park wasn't a good idea as there are too many weirdos about
I test-pitch my tents in a local park close to home, and do not leave it up in any length of time, and certainly do not sleep in them, much to the local kids' amusement!

my husband is a parks patrol officer ,please dont kill him lol
anyway we put our tent up in the local park last week and didnt have any problems , apart from the kids wanting to get in and play , i told them to %^&&^% off quite politely lol
Thanks for the advice everyone, managed to pitch it and have it down within 2 hours after a little bit of hopscoth over the local dogs business, not even one person came through the park so it was peaceful ( except the barnies between me and the oh as allways, why is that?) no hassle, and no one with the question, what are you doing? lol
