So having invested in a nice new Montana 6 for this year and it being my 3rd year of camping I was quite looking forward to this years holiday.

We are embarking to Polruan on Saturday for a week, just seen the weather, rain and 20mph winds are forecast. There was me hoping we might get to put the new tent up in the dry this summer.

Any tips for pitching in 20mph winds?

Do you have to go there? I would go where ever the weather report tells you too. For a weeks it's worth driving for longer.

Our lovely brand new Montana 6 'died' on its very first outing at the very windy Clachtoll Beach Campsite a couple of years ago.

It was gorgeous sunshine the day we pitched, a bit windy the next day and by 3am in the morning we had to abondon camp and throw everything, kids included, soaking wet into the car and trailer.

The winds were so bad that 3 guy ropes were ripped off one side, leaving small holes in the tent, the porch poles were broken and one of the steel poles snapped in two! To say it was the worst weather we'd ever camped in was an understatement. The dealer we bought it from couldnt believe the damage that had been caused when he saw it.  It was all repaired and we got new poles but to say we were gutted is an understatement.

I'm sure it wont be that bad where you're intending going and we will probably buy Outwell again when we renew our tent as we were one of the last remaining tents, half standing! Most others were completely flattened, others were abandoned and blew away!

Mind you - frightening though it was, its not put us off camping, we just check the weather forcasts more thoroughly now!!

Hi darthpaul,

You should be ok in those winds, although it does add to the fun when pitching!

I'm sure Montana owners will be along soon to offer more detailed advice, but....pitch with the back of the tent facing the wind, peg out the back guys roughly, and then use the wind to help you walk each section forwards, away from the wind direction. At least I think that's the technique!( I have an old Outwell Colorado - similar design).

Enjoy your new tent.

We survived horrific weather last year in our Vango Verona, 1st night the storm was very very strong, glad I bought Delta pegs! Trying to pitch that in rain was the last straw for that tent as the fibre poles were so slippery and the peg system for the poles was a nightmare. Have already done a test pitch of the outwell in the hot weather 2 weeks ago.

I am sure once its up it will be fine, just couldn't believe the forecast when I looked, out of the 5 days its the only with rain and the only one with wind forecast about 14mph!

You might just have to plan another trip in the sunnier weather just to dry the monty out

See they say that every cloud has a silver lining!
