Interesting stuff this. TBH I am not really sure how my "other half" would react to a single female showing more than a passing interest. (Chance would be a fine thing)

I tell you what Girls, you all seem such a lovely bunch let's arrange a meet up and find out

(For those with sense of humour displacement syndrome - I'm kidding)

I think in reality, knowing the limits is kind of what it's all about. Camping is meant to be a social activity. How can we expect people to help us when things go wrong if we're not prepared to be friendly towards one another. But it's about limits isn't it?

ie when does a friendly chat become something else?

Anyway, if you ever see me on a camp site I promise I don't bite, a small nibble maybe............

My OH is forever chatting to single women on campsites. What's his secret? Simple. I cook, he washes up. So after breakfast and dinner every day he trots up to the washing up area, which tends to be a line of three or four sinks. He'll talk to anyone who has the (mis)fortune to be doing their washing up at the same time as him. Usually that's the male half of any couples that are around, but sometimes it's single women.

Seriously, you're standing three feet away from someone else, you're both stuck there for the time it takes you to wash up and clean and wipe the sink. It would be rude NOT to talk.

A couple of years ago, we were staying at a very small site which had a space for a communal campfire. We were the only ones there, until our last night when we came back to find a small tent had arrived. After dinner, the female occupant had lit a fire and was sitting by it looking lonely so, while he washed up, I took the remainder of a bottle of wine and two glasses down to the fire and asked if I could join her. We chatted for about an hour, gazing into the fire and finishing the wine (OH doesn't drink). Very civilised!

Ive been single off and on for a long time. I find that the only " wives" who get nervous about their partners chatting to other women on site are the ones whose hubbies have been caught with their trousers down lol.

I have several male friends and their parners have no problem with my friendship.

OK, I have to say this.

I am a woman camping alone with my child most of the time. I don't surround myself with windbreaks. I smile, say hello, try to make myself appear open to conversation. I would welcome conversation from other campers, especially when my child is off playing with new friends all day.

I know I could be the one to initiate it, and I have done so, but it's really hard for a woman alone to break into an established family or group.

So if you see me, please come and chat. I'll put the kettle on and everything!

Hi Whiskydry,

Just keep giving those big, honest, open smiles and I'm sure people will chat!

I'm single and normally camp just with my son and have met some lovely families despite my being rather reserved! Often, I think they just genuiely want to check that we are ok and that's really nice to know.

I actually have the opposite problem to you this year as I'm meeting up with my two sisters and their families for the whole of a two week holiday. It's a sort of early celebration for mine and my sisters 40th this year and I just keep trying to think of ways I can 'lose' them for a few days - I need some time alone with my son!!! The thought of being in the same field as them for two weeks is quite scary - that makes me sound very ungrateful and antisocial doesn't it! They're probably saying the same about me though, sisterly love and all that!!!

Well I go camping with my sister sometimes and yes, it is important to claim your space a bit. I like to use the campsite as a base to go sightseeing, I love museums, national trust properties, cathedrals and ruins. So I just arrange a day out for my children and I and my sister can plan her day seperately from me. We can't live in each others pocket, but it's nice to share the cost of a trip to the butchers and fire up the barbecue in the evening.

I go camping with my daughter for mainly two reasons, a) to get the hell out of Dodge (Ie London!) and b) so I can have peace as she almost always finds pals and she is then off playing.
Our last trip we went into the woods, but I was approached by a woman to help her, her husband and another couple to light a campfire. Job done she brought me a glass of wine and invited us over, which was great for my daughter. I stayed a few minutes and then left to be alone. I go with groups, and with my husband and daughter, but my ideal scenario to be honest is with my best friend. She and I are so alike that when we camp it is perfect, we like good food, gossip and the peace and quiet.
I have always got chatting to people but although generally sociable my preference is to stay in and around my tent alone.
I did once get a guy who plonked himself next to me in a quiet site whilst I sat alone having a glass of wine by my fire. He seemed as if he would be happy to stay there all night (single and younger!) but I was firm and polite and took the hint - he was perfectly pleasant however, and I think it unlikely that fellow campers would harangue a single person!

I’m a “4 Types” camper

1.      On my own

2.      With my son-in-law

3.      With the wife

4.      With wife, Daughter, Son-in-law, Grandchildren.

Apart from one family that objected to camping next to a “single male” Camper on one occasion (Silly People) I have always tried to be helpful and friendly to other campers whether they be single, male/female or families.

I can understand the concern of single female campers with children, when a lone person tries to make contact/be friendly, I am a Local Authority School Governor who has had a full CRB (Police) check, that means I am deemed to be safe alone with children, but who knows that, it’s not stamped on my forehead, so you have to try and judge people to the best of your ability.

I am not “pushy” as such, but always available to help any one that requires it, the type of campers I cannot abide are the one that you say a friendly good morning to, who completely ignore you, as if you were invisible, I was brought up in the era of good manners in the 1940’s and find that attitude hard to understand, is it an age thing (68) that I have?

I will continue to be a helpful camper, so, if you see a senior gentleman on his own, wishing you a good morning with a cheery attitude, and offering assistance, (you will se my picture on my gallery images page) that’s me.

Remember, there is no such thing as bad weather……only ill prepared campers !!

alsie42.
I can understand your viewpoint (albeit younger than yourself).
I started tenting in the 60's with Cubs and Scouts (I was one of them)

As you state "full CRB (Police) check, that means I am deemed to be safe alone with children, but who knows that, it’s not stamped on my forehead"
I was assumed to be a teenage yob, (due to my age) on my first solo outing in the New Forest in 1969.

I have friends, who are happy to let me take their children of 6 and 4 years old for walks. My wife and I have grandchildren, but who else knows that on a campsite (or elsewhere?).

Whether we like it or not, a single person is likely be viewed with suspicion (male or female).

Therefore, (these days) it is up to the individual (e.g. myself) to be more careful when 'lone camping'.

I learned to judge people by what they do (behave), not what they look like, or have.

I teach youngsters (I have parents consent to be with) there are GOOD/DODGY/BAD people about. More Good than Dodgy, more dodgy than Bad.
I do 'simply' explain the difference.
KISS principle (Keep It Simple Sensibly)

There is no simple solution, so if need be, we keep our distance.

My wife and I have known each other 40 years, chatting and 'chatting-up' we know the difference.

Sadly, younger couples/marrieds cannot always differentiate, and this is where misunderstandings can occur.
The worst scenario is the insecure couple. (These do exist)

Politeness may be viewed (by some) as a weakness these days.

Pass the time of day by all means, but be prepared for it to end there and then, if the other party do not respond.
We are all entitled to our privacy, WE know that, so would not attempt to abuse that right.

Kind regards James

Disclaimer:-
This post is not intended to cause offense, or point the finger. But based on years of personal experience both home and abroad.

In the beginning there was darkness.
Then I bought a tent.
I'm not destitute, I'm just poor.
