To be honest this is something we have been looking in to for years and haven't got much further - our home insurance will only cover our equipment if it stolen from inside our house - useless! Hope someone can help us both out!
I looked into insurance and found tent insurance only covered you if the tent was damaged in bad weather and not for theft of contents or tent, but then I contacted my home insurance.I have personal possessions away from home cover and they were willing to cover £1000.00 of camping equipment for... no extra charge!
My home insurance covers me for all personal property including camping kit away from the home as standard. Check with your provider. We use Prudential.

Fabulous! Thanks for the idea. I will call my insurers. If not covered I'm up for renewal next month so I'll get one that does!
You may need to ask to ensure you get it. And make sure it includes unattended away from home. You're not at the tent all day and some can get a bit picky if you were to get robbed whilst away on a day out.
