How windy does it have to be before you wont put your tent up?

10mph, 15mph, 20mph??

Next weekend is promising to be a bit breezy?

I did it last Wed when it was quite windy, don't know what the wind speed was though.

As I was checking in, the lady warden commented that it was windy, and I was certain that she and the other wardens would have helped if I needed it.

In the end, I managed on my own, thanks to the Rapidex system on my Khyam Freelander. However, it took twice as long putting up my 4-pole canopied windbreak as it kept flapping about, grrrrrrrr!

Putting up the tarp over my tent door was a challenge too.

However, I managed in the end, taking a bit longer than usual had it been in calmer conditions.

Once you get over 20 mph gusts it starts getting uncomfortable. I reckon I would be worried once the gusts become 28+. All depends where you are camping and what shelter you can find of course...and what tent you have.

As I don't possess an Anemometer I'd not know the wind speed.

Breezy doesn't mean it's too windy.
Strong gusts DOES.
Gale force........... well no explanation needed.

The 'Beaufort Scale' is a better indicator of windy or otherwise conditions.

Here is a basic guide with numbers from Zero (Lowest) to 12 (Highest)

0 = Calm Smoke rises vertically. < 1 mph < 1 kn 0 ft < 0.3 m/s

1 = Light air Smoke drift indicates wind direction, still wind vanes. 1–3 mph 1–2 kn 0.3–1.5 m/s

2 = Light breeze Wind felt on exposed skin. Leaves rustle, vanes begin to move. 4–7 mph 3–6 kn 1.6–3.4 m/s

3 = Gentle breeze Leaves and small twigs constantly moving, light flags extended. 8–12 mph 7–10 kn 3.4–5.4 m/s

4 = Moderate breeze Dust and loose paper raised. Small branches begin to move. 13–17 mph 11–15 kn 5.5–7.9 m/s

5 = Fresh breeze Branches of a moderate size move. Small trees in leaf begin to sway. 18–24 mph 21–26 kn 8.0–10.7 m/s

6 = Strong breeze Large branches in motion. Whistling heard in overhead wires. Umbrella use becomes difficult. Empty plastic garbage cans tip over. 25–30 mph 21–26 kn 10.8–13.8 m/s

7 = High wind Moderate gale, Near gale Whole trees in motion. Effort needed to walk against the wind. 31–38 mph 27–33 kn 13.9–17.1 m/s

8 = Gale, Fresh gale Some twigs broken from trees. Cars veer on road. Progress on foot is seriously impeded. 39–46 mph 34–40 kn 17.2–20.7 m/s

9 = Strong gale Some branches break off trees, and some small trees blow over. Construction/temporary signs and barricades blow over. 47–54 mph 41–47 kn 20.8–24.4 m/s

10 = Storm Trees are broken off or uprooted, saplings bent and deformed. Poorly attached asphalt shingles and shingles in poor condition peel off roofs. 55–63 mph 48–55 kn 24.5–28.4 m/s

11 = Violent storm Widespread damage to vegetation. Many roofing surfaces are damaged; asphalt tiles that have curled up and/or fractured due to age may break away completely. 64–72 mph 56–63 kn 28.5–32.6 m/s

12 = Hurricane-force Very widespread damage to vegetation. Some windows may break; mobile homes and poorly constructed sheds and barns are damaged. Debris may be hurled about. ≥ 73 mph ≥ 64 kn ≥ 32.7 m/s

Now! What was the question????

Kind regards James

Hi. Basically, so windy that I can't run fast enough across the site to catch it!! However, there are ways and means of doing most things. If it is windy I make sure at least part of it is pegged down somewhere. That way it won't blow away. Remember, a big tent can catch a lot of wind and could easily drag you off with it.

At some stage, assuming the Delta's are inserted properly, and the ground is suitable, the tent/awning etc will be ripped away, whilst the delta's remain. LOL

The Mistral was blowing when we put our tent up in France recently - looking at the Beaufort scale, I'd have said it was a force 6/7, but gusting 8.  It took about twice as long as usual, and my arms felt like they were about to get ripped out of the sockets trying to hold it down, but we got there eventually - and it stayed up until the wind stopped blowing (and the temperature went up by about 15 degrees) two days later!  We did lose the (empty) pole bag though - didn't even notice it fly off.
