Thanks for all your comments and suggestions everyone, today I have solved the problem. While looking in our local Range for something else I came across a couple of good sized waterproof-backed fleece picnic rugs in a two-tone blue and grey pattern on a cream background, which will really go well with the tent - in fact they look nicer than the carpet which should actually go with it. Side by side they should easily cover two thirds of the living area, leaving the front bit clear - and I'll use coastycamper's idea of keeping them in place with velcro. Can't wait to pitch the tent now!

I was going to say get the carpet but you've already decided

If you do get the carpet in the future then how about getting a couple of mats for outside the tent like so:

I'd actually thought of getting a proper doormat with 'Welcome' written across it! lol

Up until last year I had never had a carpet in the tent...Bought a new tent and while at it bought the carpet that goes with it...Can I just say the comfort factor underfoot was like night and day...Great to be padding about barefoot on a morning whereas before you did that wee skip hoppity skip dance on a cold g/sheet.....

In the sleeping area I use a large peice of canvas folded over several times to proviide a bit of insulation..again great when you swing the legs over the bed in the morning....

With two dogs Im concerned with the cleaning of the carpet  so thanks for all the tips so far...Funnily enough I was in PoundLand this afternoon and picked up and looked at some picnic rugs..and the thought did cross my mind that they would be good for the floor of the tent...must get some next week.......
