hi everyone just come back from a brilliant weekend at silverstone and our first outing with our icarus 500 which was great with canopy aswell, only problem is that the material has come away from the zip about 6" in length on the bed pod. would you return it or try and sew it? gutted if i have to return it as i love this tent and where we bought it from has no more of the laurel colour left. tent otherwise performed brilliantly we had rain on the first night and no leaks great!!!.

If it is cloth I would probably sew it as I am quite confident with a needle.   Could you just return thd bed pod and ask them to repair it or even take the bed pod to one of those quick alterations places.

the bed pod is a nylon kind of material, and no they are sewn into the groundsheet at the bottom so they cant come out. has anyone else had the same problem with the icarus 500.

Same on our new Icarus 500. It didn't survive it's maiden weekend possibly caused by the grandchildren tripping over and through the bedroom doors and the zip and door parted company along the stiching. Sewed ours as I figured my sewing couldn't be any worse than the generally poor effort Vango made.

Am pleased with the tent for size, ease of erection and pack size but feel dissapointed by the overall finish Vango passed it in.

thanks i had same thought as splinter66 that i could possibly sew it better than what they had done, but on the other hand if i get a replacement what if there is something worse wrong with the replacement when it comes ie like it leaks etc, this one withstood some rain on its first outing and we had no other faults, this is a great tent we had ours up in no time and it only took us 10 mins to pack it all away great.

Obviously this being a camping forum you do hear of lots of unhappy owners with tents they have purchased not being upto shall we say scratch, theres been a spate of unhappy outwell owners and looking at this a few icarus (vango) owners. Ok theres plenty of decent offers around at the moment on both Outwell and Vango products. It does make you wonder if there skrimping on quality to be able to sell at these prices? i understand outwell are now using china for most there production.

Too the OP i think i would return the tent you shouldnt have to do work to a tent you have just paid £130+ for it was obviously not sewn very well in the first place and obviously not your fault even though the children had been tripping on the bathtub. our kids do it all the while but none of ours have come apart. The point being the more returns people like Vango/outwell etc have the more they will check there quality as it becomes less profitable for them keep taking returns. the way i look at it a deals a deal no matter what you payed you shouldnt be finishing the manufacturers job to get the perfect item you originaly thought you where getting

Agree with Richie Rich.

Both my tents are Outwells and tbf I've never had any problems of bad finish and the kids are constantly tripping over the SIG and bed pod edges! Maybe just the flavours of tents I have are a bit bit more hardwearing??

Hope you get it sorted soon so you can carry on enjoying camping life!

-------------
It always rains on tents. Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent.

With that being the problemn then i would consider having a go at it myself, please bear in mind once you have put the needle and cotton to the tent this might well void your warranty so have a good look round the tent for anymore signs of sub standard stitching. understandably you are between a rock and a hard place.

let us know what you decide and best of luck!!

ritchie
