Nicola, I'm sure you'll be fine. At Bestival there were loads of families with really young kids and the ones I spoke to all seemed happy with it. I'd recommend finding a spot on the edge of the camping field if it seems particularly crowded, and if concerned then maybe speak to the even organisers about health and safety and see what they say. I've just checked the 80s Rewind camping details, and, like Bestival, they state no BBQs or open fires in the camping fields, but ok to use cookers outside the tent. This is what most people do, but some people (like the plonkers next to us) are just plain daft and decide to cook in tent.
Don't worry about it but just be vigilant and aware of any stupidity around you, and say something if you think it will help - some people just don't think twice about the risks of cooking in the tent. All very well if they're properly prepared, but not all are.

We have done loads of Festivals over the years, only four this year I agree with the advice to get there early, and try and get the back of the tent against a fence/hedge so that side is 'safe' then stretch your guy lines out as far as possible,to create a space around your tent, people tent to pitch and cross guy wires, but once your tent is surrounded you can put them back to normal, I try and encourage others to pitch near to us so I can control the space they take, problem is; if you leave too big a space between pitches some idiot will come and pitch up in it, (we have been known to pack a tent up thats too close to us and hand it into the lost property, and play innocent when they come back...)
deffo take an old tent and minimal kit as normally you have to lug it for miles to the pitch,
keep the cooking to a single pan for late night noodles and buy from the site, unless you are feeding a big family, then used dried meals like pastas loads of bread crisps and fruit.
I keep a sharp knife in the bedroom to cut my way out of the tent in a fire, ( I have seen tents go up in seconds)
so far so good we have never had any problems at Fests, go and enjoy yourself, sleeping is for wimps...

Hi all,
We've been going to Larmer Tree Festival near Shaftsbury for the last five years, yes it's a tad folk/world music orientated but certainly not "all beards and sandels..."
We find the camnping there is excellent, we meet up with a bunch of friends we have made over the years and pitch our tents in a circle with a gazebo in the middle.
This year there were 13 of us in 8 Tents and the space in the middle was a tad too big, but lovely.

Some festival camping tips we've learned are to have a wander around the camping field and see if there are any quieter spots (usually farthest away from the entrance to the "festival village" ) before you decide where to pitch, as suggested, backing up against a fence/hedge/track also closes off one side of your tent from unwanted neighbours.
Try to keep guy ropes short or use a relatively self supporting tent. My JW Tundra 3 only really needs the two end guyropes attached to be stable, except in high winds.
We had our first incident in five years this year, when a group of VERY posh 16 year olds (talking about their recent GCSE's aged them perfectly) decided to pitch behind us, (7 pop ups in a line!) so the first night they were there we put the kids to bed (late) and sat around camp chatting and socialising and having a few shandies, went to bed about midnight, mmm sleep, then at 3 am all hell broke loose......
Loud voices......
"Rupert have you got my bottle of Champers?"
"No Tarquin but I have still got some beverages"
"Fabulous lets get disgracefully drunk"
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
As their mates drifted back it got louder and louder
"Penelope have you got any Ganja?"
"No Felicity, no more I'm already disgracefully high"
At about 4am some div, tripped over a guyline and fell on our tent, grrr, getting angry now.
Then the kids woke up and that was enoough, I got up and not wanting a confrontation walked down to security and asked politely if they could "have a word" it's a family festival and they were very kind and helpful about it.
10 mins later the security guys came by and asked the toffs to pipe down, lots of profuse apologies then back to loudness, grr, was getting ready to confront them when my girlfriend snapped and went to "have words" ouch, there's nothing scarier than an angry mother!
As she was giving them a piece of her mind others were piping up from other tents with "yeahs" and "quite right too's" they must have woken everyone nearby but... They didn't do it the next night or thereafter.
Probably their first time away from mum, but you have to learn these things somehow, at other festivals a punch in the face would probably have been the outcome. Somehow I think the peace and love did it's stuff.
Festival camping is fun but it's a different proposition to quieter, site camping.
Just be prepared and flexible.
Larmer tree's other bonus is that if you stay till Monday morning, you can fetch your car right up to the tents and load up straight into the boot. Result!
