Just wondering how most folk do it, do you do it the Yeomans way (1 pole at a time) or the Outwell way (all poles in at the same time). We do it the Yeomans way but wondered how you all do it.

One pole at a time, do the second pole back from the front door first as it lets the air in.Got you thinking?

If you do a search for pitching a Montana 6, Gary Cross suggests pitching the Montana 6 starting from the front and then working towards the back. I used this method last week and it was a doddle, definately the easiest way that I have pitched my Montana.

Yep - front to back. It's only taken 5 yrs of trying to get it perfected!

Here's the challenge when you do get it right.

How long from everything in their bags to upright and pegged out? That's not guys as well just up and not going to collapse.

A time for 2 people and if you really want a challenge a time for solo erection!

For the record my solo time this yr is 22mins - will post a 2 person time a week on Sat - can't wait.

Have just tried it the outwell way, did go up fairly easy but was very heavy with all the poles in (my neck is now aching) and had to use a third person to help. Thanks for suggesting looking at Gary's method (had missed that post) will try that when we go away on Monday.

i was always scared of overstreching the fabric where the poles pass through using the 'Outwell method', hence always one pole at a time.

I dont know how you manage it with 1 person Grumpysimon, my other half swears enough with two of us trying. I'm impressed!

PS - Are you VERY grumpy?

OMG I find it so heavy and end up nearly falling over myself in the process so I'm going to try it front to back next time - cheers.

Am only VERY grumpy when it rains - so quite a lot then!

The solo pitching started out of necessity, camping with the kids without OH, then it turned into a sort of macho ****ing contest with a friend!

It is always easier with more adults, and I do always dread having to to pitch solo, rather than just having a go for the hell of it (life on the wold side eh) - it becomes very difficult in the wind and rain.

There is usually more swearing involved when OH is pitching with me as I do expect her to be able to read my mind and be in complete sync  - clearly very annoying when this doesn't happen. Back to your original question The4ofus - suppose I can be really grumpy!

Nearly forgot - the most important thing about pitching is the the cold beer or glass of wine that beckons once the tent is up.

GS.

Hmmm. cold beer. Glass of wine. Then you have the sleeping bags to zip together, air bed to blow up, stoves to connect, gas lamps, tables, kitchen, wardrobe, suitcase to unpack.............why do we do it again?!? Like the front to back idea. I'll be looking at that next time!

Definately front to back - use front guys to hold up front poles before doing the rest!  Tried all sorts of ways but for a smallie this is by far the easiest, especilly if there's a light breeze to inflate the tent a bit. Raise tent with doors open then zip up before pegging out the guys.
