Seriously thinking about a utility tent. We cooked in our nevada m porch but the wind made it difficult on some days even with a wind break. Saw a utility tent next to a big outwell tent.
Any suggestions for utility tents please?
Do you pay extra as a 'pup' tent?
How do you give the size of your pitch when asked your tent pitch size?

Some sites will charge extra others don't. For the life of me I don't know why though? Surely when you book a pitch you are effectively hiring that space. What you put on it (within reason) should be up to you shouldn't it?

As for the size question, tell them the size of your tent and let them know you also have a utility too.

I was once a festival warden when a trailer tent went up WITH SOMEONE ASLEEP INSIDE IT - they woke up when the alarm was raised (on that site, the alarm signal was to lean on the car horn and not stop until a member of staff was there).

A quick thinking neighbour managed to slash the canvas and get them out - they were kept in hospital overnight with breathing difficulty and were out with very minor burns the next day.  By the time we got there (maybe 1 minute after the alarm was raised), the thing was well ablaze and we could do nothing to subdue it.

Unfortunately, unless the fire is spotted straight away, buckets won't help.  By the time the fire brigade arrive, the fire will have pretty much destroyed everything and they will just damp things down - they won't be able to salvage anything and I don't fancy the chances of anyone stuck inside.

This is the exact reason I usually carry a small but sharp pen knife on site and sleep with it clipped to a hook on the inside of my sleeping pod.  You really can't be too careful!

The video is a useful and realistic reminder of how careful we all have to be and how quickly a family holiday can turn into a disaster (i typed that last bit with my best Michael Buerk voice playing in my head - could you tell?)

I guess different sites have different footage space? some have a painted line for the boundary so technically some sites have no buffer space.

Moving forward, what fire prevention measures do you members adopt? from now in addition to our extinguisher we shall have a fire blanket & possibly a battery operated smoke detector, best be prepared for any eventuallity.

a battery operated smoke detector sounds good. Not sure a blanket in its container would be quick enough. Had a look at them at go outdoors but needed my glasses to see how it worked. Have you ever used the extinguishers? Are they easy to operate thinking of cold fingers in a panic.

IMV the small extinguishers are no use at all. They just aren't big enough. If I used electric, I would think seriously about taking a much larger sized extinguisher.

We have a bucket of water as well as a fire blanket - don't forget fire needs three things, a spark, a source of fuel and oxygen to burn - take away one of these and it will go out...so a fire blanket put over a pan or a stove or something similar will take away some of the oxygen. Also remember the old chip pan ads - don't throw water onto fat, dump a tea towel in your fire bucket and stick that over the pan.

Once a fire has taken hold then you've got no chance of putting it out, your only real option is the first few moments after ignition.

Keep gas bottles outside and then at least if the worst happens, someone can remove your bottle from harm's way.

The film of the bear attack is terrifying.
Why didn't the bears attack the acrylic cage, surely they could have smelled their scent.
Really scary.

I don't think there's a legal minimum. But the guidance is 6 metres between tents.
