The lifespan of a decent quality synthetic tent is about 6 months of cumulative use, yup, before the UV exposure makes the flysheet degrade to the point of leaking. Four months is a short lifespan but it's not unexpected for an ex-display tent as these get a lot of abuse...folk tripping over guylines and inners, wrenching zips, heavy traffic on the groundsheet etc.
Six months of cumulative use is about 5-7 years of average use, btw, if you normally use the tent for a 2 week holiday and a few long weekends every year. It does also depend on where and when you use it btw...2 weks of camping in the south of France in July will get more UV exposure than for the same length of stay in April in Scotland.
