Ours is a canvass tent too, and not as noisy on nylon tents, or other peoples! It was a very lighthearted post and sometimes a silent zip would be nice as an option??? I am very aware of disturbing other people when camping, and everything is louder in the dead of night.
I too like the sound of the zip, it's evocative, like the sound of a gentle rainshower on the flysheet; the crackle of a campfire; the happy chatter of children and the pop of the wine cork........ ahhh happy days
I seem to recall an old tip to reduce the noise.
Rub a candle along it, I've not done it to mine yet, but the wax lubricates it so it slides more easily, therefore quieter.
Or is it an old wives tale?
There is a song about zips.
How does it go now?
Zip a dee doo dah, zip a dee yay, my oh my what a wonderful day............
Regards James
------------- In the beginning there was darkness.
Then I bought a tent.
I'm not destitute, I'm just poor.
Another vote to keep the zip noisy ! Mrs Z often tells me I'm a bit OTT about noise but even I don't find tthe sound of a zip disturbing. I think of it as more of a sound than a noise, & Mrs Z loves it - the zip sound I mean. .....

Hold the zip puller between your forefinger and thumb and put your ring finger underneath the zip and glide it down (or up) it doen't make as much noise.
