Any of you go into stores/shops etc and haggle with the staff on price or for freebies?

Was in GO and bought a tent and managed to get carpet,print and canopy with a bit gentle tongue work.

All in all saved me 120 quid.

yep i went into wilkos to pick up the inflatable armchair we'd ordered online and noticed they had the small gas canisters for our suitcase stove at £1.48 each


the lids had dissapeared off them ( cant think where they went ) and i managed to get them for £1 each

tried it and it works like you say if you dont ask you never know.
They always have room to move on some items i should know i used to sell cars and the mark up is stupid !!!!

I was always wary and a bit scared about doing it but seen my younger brother and my daughters bf do it i got the bottle myself to give it ago,not tight with money by any stretch of the imagination but if i can save a few quid when buying i will give it a go.

I got £6.25 knocked off a wheel hub for my trailer yesterday, The guy ordered 2 for me when I had only asked for one, when he told me the price he quoted £40 for the hub plus £12.50 to get it delivered in, I argued that this was £12.50 delivery for 2 and as I only ordered 1 then my bill was £46.25. I won as well.

My OH often does (I leave it to him - he's so good at it!) - especially bulk purchases. Some retailers won't budge an inch though... Oh, yes - there is always the sob story - margins are so tight, the recession, etc, etc.

I can on occasion haggle...but not spur of the moment stuff...I really have to screw up my courage...and really want the item...  9 times out of 10...the salesman canget me to up my price!!!! So not very good at it...but have won a few battles in the war...

When we lived in Italy, the asking price was known as the "the American price" for only they would pay it.

We went to buy a fridge and after a bit of judicious haggling came out with the fridge, a gas stove, steam iron and ironing board; all for 15% below the original asking price for the fridge alone.

On returning to the UK tried it in a shop here and was shown the door!
