We are going on our maiden camping voyage next week for a couple of nights, trying out the camping experience and a 4-man tent we have borrowed from family.  We are wanting to invest in our own tent, and like the Khyam Quebec 6 2009 model or similar.

My concern is that when we looked into booking the break next week we were told that there were restrictions on the size of tents some sites could accommodate, and one site owner told us that the maximum that they could accommodate was 5m long or 5m wide including guy ropes.  The tent we are borrowing is longer than 5m without guys, yet it is only a 4 berth tent, not exactly the biggest on the market!

My query is, has anyone had problems booking on sites because they have a larger tent, ie standard 6 man or larger due to site restrictions?  We would be looking at a similar layout to the Khyam Quebec/Ontario ranges, ie living area in middle with sleeping areas at either side and no extra pods.

Some sites are restricting tent sizes, but there are loads that don't. It's better to check with the site as you have but tunnel tents are always going to be easier to accomodate than a dome tent with outshots.

Thats the first I've heard of a site owner restricting tents to 5X5m, which seems a very small space. I would just phone around until you find one that allows much bigger tents.

LOL.....fab!

It always rains on tents. Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent.

We have the Ontario 8 and have never had a problem getting onto a pitch or been told it's too big. Footprint size is 7.5m x 3.7m so not massive compared to some!!
In fact the Ontario makes maximum use of space being a tunnel tent.

Thanks for your replies, it gives me more confidence now that we shouldn't struggle to find sites.  It was just a bit concerning that 2 of the 3 sites we contacted had restrictions, when we are new to camping!

What is a "standard pitch"?

I suppose the campsites might be busy and only have room for a small tent but not a family tent? We've not had a problem with the Monty. C&CC sites have a "standard" pitch size of 7x5M so, in theory, the Monty is too wide, though it is at the discretion of site managers and was not a problem when we stayed on one. Some sites are more easy going than others and it's better to have a good space between tents than have guyline spaghetti! As long as the bitsy pitches aren't so they can cram in more tents.
