I am a great beleive in the creed that it is very much up to the indivual camper what they use etc. provided that they don't infringe on other people.
However, I do know what the OP means when they say that everything matching seems to take priority over quality etc with some people.   Try telling them that as they are camping with kids they are better off going to somewhere like Poundland and getting 6 for a pound beakers,  rather than some nice glasses and they look at you as if you have take leave of your senses.
You say take some fleecy blankets for warmth and it is no go as they will not match the sleeping bags they have bought because they are pretty rather than they will keep them warm.
