We're off to Norfolk (Cromer) camping for a week with friends, and between us we have 3 dogs. In previous years we have only gone away for a few days so haven't had to worry about them as we have always been able to visit places where we could take them with us.
This time, the kids have asked to do a few activities where dogs are not so welcome.....
So, what do people do with dogs when they are not allowed to take them somewhere? I did start to look at boarding kennels but they all seem to want up to date kennel cough vaccinations, and although my dog has had hers the others haven't. Also, I can't find any that offer to look after them for just a few hours so the overnight rate works out quite expensive - should I be searching for a specific service?
Does anyone have any suggestions or are we really looking at nominating someone to 'dogsit'?!
If we needed dog sitters in the past, we use a reliable older teenager and pay them to housesit and walk the dogs for us. Not too hard at this time of year while they are home from uni for the summer. We have our own older teenager now so get dog sitting free! I could be talked into renting him out?
we are still intending to take the dogs camping but need someone to mind them when we go out for the day to a dog free zone...will your teenager come and camp with us in Norfolk for a week?! We have 4 under 10s with us too that he could look after!
How was Manor Farm - we're going to Breck Farm - ever been there?
Could you not devise a rota when you go somewhere that doesnt allow dogs and take it in turns I know ideally you all want to go together but its not really going to be possible unfortunately.
Hope you have a wonderful camping trip and manage to work something out.
If all the dogs had up to date vaccination certificates, then it would be worth asking the campsite owner to give you the names of some local boarding kennels and giving them a ring. They will usually, ime, take day boarders even if they don't advertise that facility.
As it is, I think one of your group is going to have to dog sit for the day while the rest of you do the dogfree activity.
------------- Tackling life the Western District way
I was just reading this post because we have dogs and always have to arrange activities where they can come too when i saw cathyh's comment about her "dogsitter" and made me wonder if it was worth phoning the site to ask if they knew of any teenagers available to come and dog sit for the day?
We have 2 campsites near us and i'm going to suggest to my 14 year old that we offer her services in the form of a postcard to put up on the reception wall. Was thinking along the lines of her going to them rather than them coming to ours? What do you all think? I know i'd use it! Leave food, fizzy drinks and sweets for them to eat. The dogs would only need few short walks whilst we are gone and they could sit outside if it was nice and inside if it wasn't. Doubt we'd get much call for it as there aren't that many days out around here where you can't take dogs but still worth doing it :)
So anyone coming to Ashwell and wants to leave their dogs for the day email me :)
I think that's a great idea ashwellgirl. I'm sure there would be a demand for the service, especially if someone came to the site to dog sit; I know I would.
As much as we love the outdoors our ttypical English weather often forces us to do indoors stuff with our kids, such as going swimming or to a museum. Of course we can't take the dogs to these places and one of the group does end up having to stay behind to dog sit.
This year we have seen a couple of days out that everyone wants to go to (funnily enough they are outdoors but dogs are not welcome!) so we were investigating the possibility of a dog sitter. The camp site have recommended a nearby kennel but they won't compromise on the kennel cough vaccine, and my friend's dogs haven't had it, so that's a no go.
Looks like we're going to be drawing those straws again!
The facilities are clean and there seem to be more everytime we go as the owners are improving them all the time.
It is basically a massive field and pitch where you like, except the EHU`s which are all along the top. Gillychick had an EHU whilst we were there and she was pitched between two big caravans.....which is the only downside. The site is surrounded by woodland and its perfect for dog walking.
The beach at West Runton is dog friendly and has masses of rockpools and kept our kids entertained for hours.
There are several big houses / country parks which let dogs in.
We had one holiday to Cornwall without the dog ( my parents came and house, cat dog sat) and we did lots of dog unfriendly things then. So when we go away with the dog she can join in everything with us.
While I think this is great in theory and a fab idea and something that is doable but you need to think about the implications what if the dog got loose and god forbid bit someone or got knocked over I know these things are probably few and far between but you would need insurance just incase anything did occur - I for one would definately pay someone to look after my dogs but would only do so knowing they were fully insurance and also would there be a maximum number of dogs to look after at any one time.
Sorry if I sound like im putting a dampener on this x
Check out Deers Glade as they have kennels at about £14 a day. Not sure if they only board for people who use their site but worth a call 01263 768633 or visit their website. They are about 10 min drive from where you are staying.

I would be the same as you, no way would I leave my dogs with someone who didn't have insurance, probably wouldn't leave them anyways but definately not without insurance.
I saw some kennels on a campsite once, they were horrific so make sure you check out the kennels before leaving your pets in them
If I can;t take my little dog, I leave him in nice kennels at home where he is known and he knows them.
It is expensive, yes, but that is the price we pay for the companionship and love of a pet.
Either that, or I stay at home. Just wish there was a reliable adult to leave him with, but there isn't!
