just go for it, we have had some really good laughs putting the tent up in the rain. last time we went we got soaked dried off had a beer then went to bed woke up at 1.30 am rain had stopped sat outside looking at the stars drank another beer and the next morning the weather was glorious, it all adds to the fun of camping.
i always park were i can watch the missus put the tent up and with a bit of care and planning you can park so that the rain doesnt come through the car window if you have to wind it down to tell her if she has missed anything, you just have to put a little thought into it
We have a tent that is outer first, we replaced our Diablo 600 with a Vail 700, glad we did too for this weekend at Bracelands it threw it down. The mistakes we made were wearing jeans and the tent was at the bottom of the trailer.
We got it up fairly quick, thanks to being familiar with it now and because the tent has a canopy we were ale to wheel the trailer in first to empty it then reverse in the car.
having pitched i strong winds and rain, give me rain anyday
agree with others, rain while camping is innevitable so just learn to deal with it - it has got to be done so you might as well enjoy it. And certainly dont rush your choice of pitch/location and pitching unless you like moving/regretting stuff later
for a tent that will pitch solo (like our Pyramid) I do it myself so its only me wet. Frame tent needs two so it gets 2 until the canvas is over the frame then I carry on to finish myself - no point 2 people getting soaked
I always load car with all the main kit handy on top. If it is really pouring would give it a chance to subside, to avoid a really wet tent. Have at least 2 mallets so we both peg and at least one foam kneeling pad I dont get wet legs. We also have the pegs in washing up bowl so it is much harder to lose pegs/peg bag while putting it up
In warm weather shorts and w/p top is fine, if cold would probably travel in my water resistant walking trousers (not over trousers) as they dry real quick
We actually like putting up in the rain as it feels so lovely and cosy to settle in and put the kettle on when the job is done
We have just had our first experiance of pitching in the rain and thank god i put the g/sheet tent and poles in the roof box wife thought i planned it but it was pure luck!!
I found the wind was more of a pain than the rain and as our new tent was quite large it need all 4 of us to do it,we all started in water proofs and ended up in shorts and t shirts was much easier, and after a few choice words between me and the one who must be obeyed we hit the warm showers and had a good laugh about it !!
If the rain keeps up like this, I might be nipping to town and getting another pop-ip tent! A few seconds and it's up.
we're away at the weekend, not going far. Weather looks better for Friday morning, so fingers crossed. At least the tent pegs should go in a bit easier
