We done our first camping trip last October, 16th - 19th. Boy, it was chilly of an evening, even with a heater. But we do have an Ohio XL which is difficult to warm up unless all 3 bedrooms are zipped up.

I would camp in October again but earlier in the month.

Until 6 years ago I regularly camped In a small tent up to end of October and into Novenber without EHU or heat. Just ensured I had thermals and layers with good 3-4 season mummy bag. Not sure I'd be able to do it now because of disability and difficulty drying wet tent.

It's not the cold that gets to me..it's the early nights. The kids don't like it getting dark at 6 or 7pm and sit  bored and whinging in the tent. We end up going to bed at 9pm just to shut them up. It would be different if they were old enough to take to the pub.

Hello again Tommy. We went to North Yorkshire last October and during the day was great as it was still fairly warm but as mentioned above the short nights can be a bit of problem.  It got dark around 7ish and boy did the temp drop fast.  We could not believe one morning we awoke to a light dusting of groung frost!!  I would not let this put you off as long as you are prepared for this and have lots of warm clothes.  Our last camp will be Pillaton Hall in September.  With the kids having their October holidays even later this year, we have booked to go to Turkey for some sunshine.  Have you managed to get that monty out yet?

We will be trying our first October/November camp this year. I am investing in a Polycotton, and I've already got a Delonghi 4kw gas heater (Yes it does have all the safety features!), so I'm hoping it will be a success, and then it would be great to be able to camp with friends for New Year!
I like the idea of a Halloween camp - Halloween happens to be my Birthday, so it would make a nice change. Don't do much in the way of celebrating nowadays, as I usually have to host a party for the kids or ferry them to one, so I may actually get to kick-back and have a drink for a change Will definitely give the cake a miss though – that amount of candles near a tent is a definite no, no!

What does go on at campsites at that time of year? Are there many campers desperate enough to leave their warm homes behind?

I love out of season camping. I also like the fact that it gets dark early. Time to get the oil lamps out, and the BBQ going for some extra heat. The main bonus for me though, is that you can find you have the site to yourself. I try to only use quiet sites if possible.

I camped over the New Year weekend last year, and survived to tell the tales.

Now that I have the gear for cold weather camping, I have decided to extend the camping season,  and shall camp in Nov, Dec and Feb when I have holidays booked.

We've camped into November before with no EHU or heater - a campfire and good sleeping gear is essential though! I much prefer camping out of season, like Raf says, quite often you can get the site to yourself

Edited to add - we had better weather when we camped last November than we had in March/April this year!

Hi KK , I have just found out that i am getting the September weekend off work so my wife and kids insisted that i go back to Blair Castle again , so it's all booked for the Fri / Sat / Sun and we'll get to try our Monty 6 at last !

You obviously missed the GAS bit Val - It's one of THESE and we use it for back up in the conservatory. They have three heat settings and kick out quite a lot of heat on the top setting. If we are on a site that has EHU we will also take the Delonghi Bambino oil radiator for when we are sleeping - it sits in the pod (the gas heater has safety features, but to be sure!). I’m thinking that I can get up warm in the pod; go make a coffee; switch on the fire; get back in the pod for 10mins whilst the main tent warms up, and all should be toastie – well that’s the plan. It’s a bit bulky, but if it’s a success it will be worth the effort.

Tracey
