Hi backagain, I agree - Treyarnon is a lovely place. Its main drawback, as you point out, is that it's not a safe bathing beach at certain states of the tide. I've not tried the campsite above the beach because it doesn't take dogs but there are plenty of others in the area.
You're right, too, about the congestion. The lanes down to Treyarnon - one from St Merryn, the other from Porthcothan - are very tight. Part of the problem is that many of the holiday-makers are in big 4x4s and are obviously not used to driving on narrow lanes. I suppose if you're used to driving in Chelsea, the Home Counties, or on the motorway a Cornish lane must seem like a rabbit burrow. The first sight of a tractor and they panic!
When you say you have family in Queens, I take it you mean Indian Queens not the suburb of New York?
floggitt, I wish the answer was "tomorrow". But it's likely I'll be off on another trip soon, hopefully before the end of the month but if not during October (weather permitting).
Oh, and thanks to everyone for the very kind comments about my original post.

What newbies to cornwall dont realise is that cornish "hedges" are normally made of granite or similar stone but covered in hedge.Hit one of those and you can totally wreck your car.
As we were driving from indian queens we used that lane from st merryns, carefully, i might add
Ive found a lot of the beaches along the north coast have rip currents. One day i went down to great western beach in neyquay and was unable to walk out further than waist height because of a rip current pulling us across sideways with each step we took.We just went back in and went further down the beach.
If you are on a board and get caught by a rip its not so bad, you just go with it.On fistral the locals use the rips to get out to the surf. They get caught in it and let it take them out then paddle across to the waves.
If you havent experienced one its pretty intimidating when you get into one, just that one up to my waist gave me a massive respect for the ocean.
Those life guards do an amazing job but its so annoying that so many holiday makers ignore their advice on the tannoys when they could possibly lose their lives because of it.
