I would definitely add a fleece inner liner. I've been highly impressed with them. There is no such thing as a cold night, only an inadequate sleeping-bag.
I would say go for it. My three kids are 5, 2 and 5 month and we are planning on going camping in October several times using the Sun camping tokens. We are going to take extra fleece blankets and dressing gowns to keep warm. The baby is always the warmest out the lot of us. We dont mind just going for the weekend, although it can take a long time to pack and unpack the car.
Some brilliant input on this thread - thanks all! Who was it who posted up the pics on another thread of them camping in the snow - was it Andy (3MadBoyz?) - that's proper "cold weather camping"! I'm looking forward to it - although be've got to work out when exactly yet. Can anyone let me know roughly when the October half term holiday will be please? As a couple with no kids it makes sense for us to avoid that week, and the weekends either side, if we can.
------------- If you go camping to "get away from it all" - why take it all with you?
My wife and I went away in April this year. It did get close to zero one night, but we used my XL Sleeping bed on top of the air mattresses, and duvet on top of us. Also a woolly hat helped.
We're planning a long weekend in the Lincolnshire/Norfolk border area round the end of September/early October.
I agree with Daveyhey regarding a fleece liner in a sleeping bag. My one (liner that is) has a hood that I use for holding a stuff bag (actually the bag for the sleeping bag) with a thick jacket inside for use as a pillow.
Thermals as a base layer, usually go on about 1 hour before sunset.
Hot dinner, hot drink, and walk before beddy byes also helps.
You need to learn what suits YOU, as some can stand cooler conditions that others.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Regards James
------------- In the beginning there was darkness.
Then I bought a tent.
I'm not destitute, I'm just poor.
we were camping up until Halloween last year. With the right gear you can keep warm. We won't be going that late this year as last time it was dark by 5pm and we tried to enjoy playing cards 2 hours longer than normal but to no avail..
