We booked a site in Dorset which had good reviews on here. On arrival we found our pitch but had to hunt for the EHU. It was an extension hooked over the fence behind the next pitch & the socket was full of water. I tried phoning the owner but got answerphone.  We decided to turn around & come home. If the nightly fee was cheap we would have stayed without using the electric but at £18 pn we didn't think it was worth it,

Even when the user then leaves his ehu on the floor off his tent, inside a door that leaks as we had her the other day? I think Val's point is that ehu (as with many things in life) should be treated with a degree on caution and a dose of common sense

Not exactly the way it happened, but I think you may be refering to me :)

Unfortunatley when I went to Uni. the course in hindsight had been discontinued due to lack of funding, and when I tried to enrol for the common sense lectures, I was informed that everyone was born with exactly the correct ammount.

Nothing is 100% safe, but those connections coupled with a poor EHU look like trouble.

I looked up Health and Safety to see who to report this to and it said that leisure activities/places (incl campsites etc) come under the local council.

Emailed the local council (incl photos) on Friday and have had an email from the environmental health officer today saying they will be making a visit to the site in due course and will advise me of the outcome.

He said he views this very seriously.

Will let you all know when I hear back.

I think that's a good next move on your part, given that you did already try to complain on the spot and were brushed off. I'm all in favour of a good bit of constructive complaining to the relevant person. If more of us did complain on the spot about shoddy goods or services then made a point of following through, more would be done to improve things.

BS7671 IEE Wiring Regulations 17th edition has its own section (708) for caravan and camping parks as they come under special locations. its states that each pitch should have its own socket individualy RCD protected and not be more than 20m away from the unit when pitched. Also socket outlets should not be grouped in more than 4 outlets to prevent the cables crossing a pitch other than the one it to be used for.

If thats of any use to any one

Andy,

Thats interesting - we've been to a couple of places that obviously don't comply with the regulations!!

Some of the examples shown here reinforce why we dont do EHU. Being outside and using electric has extra risks.Bring all the other factors into the equation like rain, children running about, dogs and dodgy wiring and its not looking good.
A site we stayed at had some rather shocking looking wiring.A couple we goto speaking to were explaining how it had tripped out.Further investigation by following the wires through a no entry area revealed that particular hook up point was attached to an extension lead apparently just plugged into the mains.
They werent happy and were reporting it to the appropriate authorities.

I really do think it wont be long before we see an incident at a campsite somewhere where a fire starts because of electrics.

Considering the most common causes of fires include faulty electrics and naked flames surely its best to reduce that risk as much as we can when camping ? After all you are relying on the fact the campsite owner has wired everything in safely when you plug into it but you dont actually know if they have.

Just my take on it.
