It's easiest if you can pitch the tent (in the gsarden for instance) to clean the outside of the fly. In my experience, bird droppings come off using just water but you may need to soak them first - try laying squares of soaked kitchen roll over the droppings and leaving for half-an-hour.
As Grad Sailor says, do not use detergent. Personally, I've always found just plain ol' tap water does the trick. And use something soft (an old duster for instance) to wash or wipe.
