ok so you've come to the end of your camping trip with family , in my case the in laws and cousins in laws who i adore and love as if they were my family

and we're packing up to go home and im walking round my tent and area picking up all the rubbish , bits of paper and bits and bobs that have been dropped by us and other people and i look across and see that all the others have packed up and are just going to leave their rubbish lying there ? most years i'd just go over to their area and pick it up myself without saying a word

i have a lot of respect for them , theyre great people but this tiny thing niggles me , do i say something and risk upsetting them. falling out or just pick it up and carry on smiling ??

Why should you be their slave? They are capable people and can pick up their own rubbish. Just lazy and not considerate?  If that were my family I'd tell them, and you can ask my family!! My mum and I cleared away rubbish on a Cornwall site but the lazy buggers had bagged the lot but just couldn't be bothered to walk 1/2 a yard to the bin!! We all go round too but to be fair everyone clears after themselves as it's just second nature to be respectful. I'd offer to help them but I wouldn't...no couldn't not air my annoyance and point out their failings. Sorry for the rant!

It always rains on tents. Rainstorms will travel thousands of miles, against prevailing winds for the opportunity to rain on a tent.

just casualy drop into conversation that at the end of your trip if they help you with your litter picking you will help them.

its very difficult when you dont want to upset the apple cart, that would be even more to pick up

I'd just remind them of the phrase "leave nothing but footprints". I couldn't let them get away with leaving it - but then I'm a bolshie mare!

I would say something like, "Hey guys, I've started a fresh bin bag and collected my rubbish, who wants it next?  After all we found it tidy here, let's leave it so"

If there are any kiddies in the party I'd offer a reward for the fastest litter picker and make a game of it, whilst the adults are doing the main packing up.  Or when you next camp with them, I'd get a discussion going on the last night about who's doing what in the morning so you can all help each other get packed and include litter removal as part of the assigned list of tasks.

Bossy-boots, me!!

litter sweeps are battered into my brain being in the army, but thats not a bad thing, i would do what  you said, mention campsite litter bugs in conversation, and go on a rant about it to get the point across.
