can make you mad sometimes

Phoned up a favourite site of ours, asking for a quote for the "wedding" weekend. Very nice lady at the end of the phone, was really helpful etc. Then at end of conversation she added, "you do know that it's an extra days bank holiday, so we will only take a minimum of 4 nights". So we would all have to rush up after work on the Thursday and pitch while it was getting dark, instead of a nice leisurely drive up Friday morning!!

So I kindly said thank you and I will get back to you. So due to the prices per night and the extra night imposed on us, we can't afford to stop there now.

Never mind - I have a few made it on the list that will accept us for 3 nights

Our favourite site has a 4 night minimum at bank hols too. What should be a nice cheapish short break is too expensive for us too. Never mind. Have a good time where ever you get away to.

I don't mind staying the extra night but the site I want isn't taking bookings til 1st March and I'm worried that if I can't get on there it will be too late to find anywhere else. Aaaargghhh! Camping doesn't usually get me stressed but it is now! haha

I try and avoid camping on Bank Holidays. It tends to attract the wrong type of camper a lot of the time. Last year was complete hell. EHU constantly tripping because of idiots using microwaves, xboxes, 32" LCDs in tents. folks getting far too drunk and noisy right through the night. Showers being used as toilets etc etc etc. Never again.

I try to avoid any kind of staying away from home on Bank Holidays. I'd rather stay put and enjoy the fact that everyone else has buggered off.

There's a particularly pleasant Schadenfreude in sitting in the garden with a few friends and some cold beers watching the reports of mumblety miles of tail backs on the motorways.

We have decided to avoid Easter weekend, but are going to a 5 van site for the 'wedding' weekend, and have also booked a 5 van site for the spring bank holiday.  As OH works in a school he can only take time off during school holidays, otherwise I think we would avoid any bank holiday and stay at home.

I was under the impression that the wedding day (Friday) was a public holiday not a bank holiday.

Employers are not compelled to give you the day off.
So the site that said you have to pay 4 nights min as it's an extra days bank hol is trying it on.

Or have I got the wrong end of the stick.

Just like to say we not all like that, working full time bank holidays are most welcome and i like to get as much camping and fishing in as poss. Its just a shame there is a fixed 3 and 4 night stay as it makes it expensive when you only have 2 or 3 nights to be away. I try and make the most of the smaller sites away from the coast as some of these will let you have 1 or 2 nights and to these sites i would like to say thank you.

They're the same difference really. You might be thinking of the rule that employers have to give you 20 days including bank holidays maybe?

Anyway, here's the official list and it seems we get an extra one in 2012 for the Golden Jubilee!

I dont mean folks like yourself Jeff. There are a lot of folks who go camping on Bank Holiday weekends that wouldnt dream of coming on to UKcampsite for some good advice. They buy or borrow a cheap tent then load it with the noisiest of electrical items that they can find, then make as much noise as possible and drink till the early hours. As i've said its not all campers that do that on bank holiday weekends, but its a dead cert that you'll come across a few of that type in some of the busier sites. Shame, because folks like you who are working full time and want a genuine break have to look harder for somewhere that you'll get the peace and quiet. Hope you get somewhere peaceful.

We also find ourselves avioding bank holiday camping these days.

Not only for the above mentioned reasons but also because I hate it when campsites are sooooo packed that you have to wait ages to get a cold shower.

Lots of people = far too much noise for me.  Even well behaved campers can be pitched a little close on a busy site.

I much prefer to have a choice of pitch and a bit of space, oh and no trafic jam to sit in.

One site my OH contacted has a 5 night Bank Holiday rule!!
Personally I think that's ridiculous as a bank holiday weekend is only 1 extra day off work!

Think we are going to try a CL or CS this year for the Bank holiday weekends.

I try either before or after the bank holiday, as some sites have a price hike. Or try and avoid the weekend for the same reason.  I think this is why it takes me such a long time to decide which sites to go for.

We are not the wrong type of camper either, just like to go away bank hols as it gives us an extra day camping.

I have found 2 sites that will cater for 3 nights over both bank hols weekends, both of which we have never been to before.. shame i couldn't get the 3 working days of in between and the kids of school, could have had 11 days away then.

Might rejoin CCC then can go on the CL and CS sites, kids don't mind the quiet sites. We tried Haven last year, it was far too noisy and the kids hated it.

We go away on Bank holidays but because of the 3-night minimum rule we could only go to a 'local' campsite so that we could at least make use of the Friday night...

this time we are hoping to go a bit further by booking 3 nights, but going early Friday morning.

TBH though if I was a campsite owner I would definitely have a minimum night rule at Bank Hols and would also take hefty deposits - they are the only 'guaranteed' out of season weekends imo and I know until last year when they introduced deposits our fave site used to lose loads of bookings when people just didn't turn up (we know because we used to call 8am on Sat morning to get the vacant plots, get there by 10am and just pay for the 2 nights we actually wanted!)

We like to camp anytime of the year, but avoid bank holidays 100% and its not due to the wrong type of camper? just the volume of campers and traffic.
We prefer to go away more weekends now and camp in the colder months as well to enjoy the quiet sites, even in October one site we use has 1 or 2 tents on it.
